Devs of post-apocalyptic open-world survival game aren’t afraid to experiment. Some decisions are set to alter gameplay in Atomfall

Rebellion Studio is planning to incorporate innovative elements into their upcoming game, Atomfall, which could drastically alter the gaming experience. According to the game’s Lead Designer, Ben Fisher, these changes may include secret events that can alter the game world’s status. For instance, these events could greatly influence the number of enemies on the map. As Fisher explained in an interview with VideoGamer, “Whether it will work or not, I am eager to discover.” The developer appears to be excited about his creative liberty.

We seized the core creative concepts we had in mind and simply sprinted with them, resulting in some daring experiments you wouldn’t find elsewhere due to uncertainty of the outcome. (…) The game allows for player-triggered events or missed opportunities that can significantly impact the enemy population within the game world, and so forth…

As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but draw parallels between the ambitious vision Techland had for Dying Light 2 and the concept that Atomfall seems to be embracing. In Dying Light 2, player decisions were intended to shape not just their personal journey, but also the power dynamics of in-game factions, even influencing zombie distribution across the map. Regrettably, this intricate system didn’t fully materialize in the final version of Dying Light 2. However, Atomfall appears poised to step up and deliver on this promise, potentially offering a more immersive, dynamic open-world experience where player choices truly matter.

Fisher emphasized that Rebellion puts a strong emphasis on an immersive experience where exploration plays a crucial role. Unlike some quest systems, this one won’t guide players directly to their next objectives. Instead, they’re encouraged to delve deeper into the role of a detective, uncovering clues and solving mysteries on their own. The fact that an independent studio is given the creative freedom to fully explore its ideas, and the game’s development taking place in such an environment, should instill us with confidence.

The video game “Atomfall” is set for launch on March 27 across multiple platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Notably, it will be available on Game Pass from day one as well.
