2024 saw Destiny 2 unfold like no other year, dividing opinion among players. As humanity triumphed over The Witness in The Final Shape, so too did fans applaud Bungie for delivering a satisfying conclusion to the long-running Light vs. Dark storyline.
Regardless of its initial triumph, one victory can’t sustain a franchise indefinitely. As is frequently the case, Bungie encountered difficulties preserving the momentum after the launch of The Final Shape. A rebrand aimed to distance itself from the unfavorable associations tied to Destiny 2’s seasonal model, yet Episodes Echoes and Revenant combined witnessed the lowest player count ever recorded.
The large number of people leaving could be due to The Final Shape being seen as a final destination by many, similar to how one might view it as an endpoint in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). With Thanos defeated and the original Avengers team disbanded, there wasn’t much left to keep people engaged.

For Destiny 2, a series of three independent epilogue episodes were thought to be the solution. However, the first two of these didn’t meet expectations. They had story elements that felt disconnected, design choices that raised eyebrows, and were plagued with numerous bugs. Essentially, Echoes and Revenant portrayed a game that seemed to be struggling to stay afloat.
You know what they say, though. Third time’s the charm.
Along came Heresy
In my opinion, the Episode Heresy content seems akin to high-end Destiny 2 material. It doesn’t quite reach expansion level quality, but it nearly achieves that mark. Given the extra time Bungie had to prepare for this release, it’s evident in every aspect of its production.
By creating something desirable, you’ll attract a large audience, as demonstrated by Steam player numbers returning to levels not seen since shortly after The Final Shape launch. A compelling narrative? Absolutely. Loot systems that value and reward players’ time investment? Definitely. Special events with unique features instead of repetitive ones from past years? Affirmed.
If Heresy serves as a preview for the summer 2025’s comprehensive Apollo expansion of Destiny 2, its path ahead shines brightly with golden prospects.
Regrettably, an abundance of content could unintentionally create more avenues for Destiny 2’s most significant challenges to infiltrate its universe.

Squashing Bugs
Although The Final Shape enjoyed considerable critical acclaim, financially, its performance didn’t meet Bungie’s expectations to the extent that a large number of employees were let go. Regrettably, this situation is not uncommon within the industry, and Quality Assurance (QA) departments often bear the brunt of such challenges, as indicated by an increase in unexplained technical issues or anomalies.
On March 12, during Destiny 2’s weekly reset, Heresy Act 2 was released. Alongside all the advertised content, players found that Rite of the Nine, an event initially scheduled for release in Act 3 on April 1, had accidentally been included prematurely. In an unfinished state, Bungie swiftly took the servers offline for emergency maintenance shortly after its discovery.

While occasional issues can be expected, persistent problems are a whole different story. Ignoring complaints about bugs from the current players, Destiny 2’s initial experience for new players urgently requires an overhaul.
Sometimes things go wrong, but when they keep happening, it needs immediate attention. The player base is expressing dissatisfaction with bugs in Destiny 2, and the onboarding experience for new players needs to be fixed right away.
Throwing inexplicable error codes and creaking infrastructure into the mix is a sure-fire way of turning more prospects away before they discover the magic of Destiny 2, still unmatched by its competitors after almost a decade of service.
As a gamer, I’m on the edge of my seat, with the next chapter of Destiny 2 almost within grasp. If we can address any remaining challenges before “Heresy” transforms into “Codename Frontiers,” I firmly believe that Destiny 2 will take flight to new heights!
