In other words, since the internal team at Bungie can no longer access Destiny 2‘s initial campaign, The Red War, it may no longer be playable on live servers in the future.
In 2024, science fiction writer Matthew Martineau sued Bungie, claiming that the main antagonist group, the Red Legion, featured heavily in their ‘Red War’ campaign, had been copied from his blog posts on WordPress.
Regarding the ongoing case, David Aldridge, our Engineering Head, affirmed some details concerning the project’s present status. Notably, it’s been determined that our developers can no longer operate the campaign because of modifications made to the engine’s programming.
The full statement from Aldridge reads as follows:
The ‘Red War’ legacy build is no longer functioning as its old code doesn’t match with the advanced infrastructure that Destiny 2 has developed since the retirement of the ‘Red War’ campaign. In simpler terms, the game has grown and evolved so much that the old ‘Red War’ version can no longer run.
As a passionate follower, I’m clarifying that my team, Bungie, can’t offer a duplicate of the game as it was in 2017. This statement effectively squashes any lingering speculation about the campaign potentially being reintroduced into the main game in the future.
Bungie using YouTube videos to make their case
According to Game File’s report, Bungie was left with no other choice but to use YouTube videos and compilations to present their case effectively in court, as detailed later in the statement. This was the only viable option remaining, short of completely reworking the entire code for “The Red War.
According to Aldridge, the supplementary documents attached to Jonathan To’s Declaration provide the most suitable, in fact, the only practical means for the court to examine the work in question.
