Destiny 2 raid Wrath of the Machine’s chances of returning look bleak

As a long-time Destiny 2 player and raid enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment upon hearing the latest news about Wrath of the Machine. This raid, with its chaotic World’s First run and the intriguing Outbreak Prime mystery, holds a special place in my gaming heart. It was the first raid I ever managed to complete, and it still stands as one of the most memorable gaming experiences for me.

2025 is when Bungie revealed their roadmap for raids in Destiny 2, however, the absence of any reference to Wrath of the Machine has caused a continued decrease in expectations that it might make a comeback.

The Wrath of the Machine was initially launched on September 23, 2016, as part of the final expansion for Destiny’s original version, Rise of Iron. From the frenzied race for the World’s First completion to Datto and his team deciphering the World’s First Outbreak Prime, this raid has a unique significance among Destiny enthusiasts. Given its popularity, fans have been eagerly requesting its return for quite some time.

On September 25, 2024, Bungie unveiled their plans for Frontiers raids, stating that only one raid per year would be launched at the start. This suggests that the possibility of Wrath of the Machine returning to Destiny 2 as a reprised raid is slim.

As a devoted player, I was taken aback when the developers revealed they’d be pouring more effort into Pantheon later in the expansion, by introducing new challenges within existing raids instead of revisiting Wrath of the Machine, which many of us had expected after Vault of Glass, Crota’s End, and King’s Fall. However, it seems that Bungie’s content revamp has steered them away from bringing back Wrath of the Machine in their current plans.

It’s clear that fans aren’t pleased about this situation. One fan even stated, “It’s quite strange how Bungie seems to overlook the fact that Rise of Iron was an expansion with a raid,” while another added, “Does this mean we can stop anticipating the annual return of Wrath of the Machine, correct?

Skarrow9’s assertion suggests that if Wrath isn’t released this year, it might imply that we may never receive it. Given that Bungie has yet to provide a clear roadmap regarding the remaining parts of The Final Shape DLC, this observation holds some weight.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but feel a glimmer of anticipation for the potential return of Wrath of the Machine before Frontiers sets sail next year. Yet, the deafening silence from Bungie leaves me concerned, as the community’s optimism and enthusiasm seem to dwindle with each ticking day.

Based on previous expansions’ patterns, it seems likely that Destiny 2 will feature two additional raids and dungeons prior to Frontiers. To date, only one raid – The Final Shape, Salvation’s Edge – has been unveiled. Although this raid was highly successful, the subsequent content has left some players yearning for more.
