Destiny 2 Edge of Fate download size causes one player to completely abandon the game

With the debut of Destiny 2’s The Edge of Fate extension today, some gamers are taken aback by the massive file size required for the download. Across all platforms and retailers, players will need at least an additional 138 gigabytes on top of their existing storage, as indicated by Steam moderators. Regardless, it appears that this expansion for Destiny 2 is going to necessitate a considerable amount of disk space and time for downloading, to the extent that at least one player has decided to abandon the game altogether.

Destiny 2 The Edge of Fate file size is enough to cause a player to drop the game completely

In the recently unveiled two-year plan by the creators of Destiny 2, known as Frontiers, The Edge of Fate is the first expansion. Following this on September 9th comes the next expansion for Frontiers, named Ash & Iron. The subsequent significant expansion, titled Renegades, featuring Star Wars-themed content, is scheduled for release on December 2nd. This marks a change in Destiny 2’s traditional expansion approach, moving towards two smaller expansions per year instead of one large one.

Many players on social media platforms related to Destiny 2 are expressing shock at the size of the download. However, one user posted a Steam discussion explaining that the game’s overall size is causing them to quit playing. The post describes their experience: “I was updating the game and couldn’t understand why it was taking so long. When I checked the discussions, I saw from the second pinned post that it says the game needs a total of 331.40gb after installation. I can’t believe that!” This total includes the base files for Destiny 2, so the additional size due to the new expansion is only around 148gb, not 300gb.

The user goes on to say, “I need to remove it because I’m running out of storage. No, I’m not planning to delete/uninstall other programs or invest in a new hard drive/solid state drive for Destiny 2.” Signing off with a poignant note, “It’s been a wonderful journey playing for many years, but as Q once said, all good things must eventually end…” The large file size of Destiny 2 is causing issues for players. At the minimum, it’s forcing some gamers to uninstall other titles just to free up space. It’s unfortunate that a game has to lose players due to its massive file size, and with Bungie’s recently disclosed two-year plan, this isn’t the last update players will have to manage this year.

Some users contend that the comments imply this download is exclusively for the duration of the download process and shrinks once it’s finished. However, requiring additional 130, 140, or even more gigabytes for a download, especially for a game like Destiny 2, can be prohibitive. On a personal computer or console, such large file sizes may restrict players to a few significant games at once. Furthermore, not everyone has reliable high-speed internet, so the download of this size could take considerable time based on each person’s unique circumstances.

As a dedicated gamer, I can attest that The Final Shape expansion wasn’t remarkably different from the previous major expansions in terms of size. To put it into perspective, it was around 150 gigabytes to download – a size not unfamiliar to us seasoned gamers. However, it seems like I’m one of the few who decided to step away from the game for a while. Contrarily, Steam has seen an influx of players for Destiny 2, making it the ninth most played game on the platform as per SteamDB at this moment. It’s clear that this wasn’t an issue for thousands of other gamers out there. With its longevity spanning over years and regular updates, it looks like Destiny 2 still has a few chapters to unfold in its epic saga.
