Destiny 2 devs found out support was ending when players did

According to reports, a lot of the developers at Bungie were surprised to learn that Destiny 2 was being sunsetted, and some were still actively developing new content for the game when the news was released.

Destiny 2’s developers announced on May 21st that they’re stopping active development of the game. A final update, called Monument of Triumph, is scheduled for June 9th. While players will still be able to play online, this marks the first time since the game’s 2017 launch that no new content will be added.

A Forbes report by Paul Tassi indicates that many of the game’s developers were surprised by the announcement.

Destiny 2 devs were working on new content when news dropped

Even though Bungie decided to stop supporting Destiny 2 earlier this year and began shifting its focus to Marathon, most employees didn’t learn about the change until the official announcement was made to the public.

Because of this, developers were still busy creating future content like Shattered Cycle, initially planned for release this summer. They realized it wouldn’t be ready to launch alongside the community updates.

The report indicates that certain individuals were aware Destiny 2’s lifespan was limited. Some of them were still focused on the Monument of Triumph update, while others had already transitioned to working on the Marathon project.

People who learned about the situation urged their managers to share the news with everyone at the studio. Keeping it secret made those in the know feel cut off and created tension within the team.

Although development on Destiny 2 is finishing up, Bungie isn’t currently planning a Destiny 3, and the company is likely to undergo substantial layoffs. Despite this, fans are actively trying to convince Bungie to reconsider, and a petition requesting a sequel has already gathered over 200,000 signatures.
