As a dedicated cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of cinema over the past few decades, I must say that the U.K. and Ireland box office performance in July 2024 is nothing short of impressive! It’s been a while since we’ve seen such strong numbers, reminiscent of the golden days of cinema.
In July, the U.K. and Ireland’s movie theaters collected a staggering £103.3 million ($132.5 million), which represents the highest monthly revenue since December 2023, as reported by figures from Comscore.
Although there’s been an increase, it’s important to note that the cumulative figure for the year still lags 14% behind what was recorded in 2023, mainly because we haven’t seen any event comparable to “Barbenheimer” this past summer.
In its third week, “Despicable Me 4” from Universal topped the box office with an impressive £28.2 million. This animated sequel has already outperformed the total earnings of the original “Despicable Me” (£20.2 million) and is performing 4% better than “Despicable Me 3” at the same stage. Currently, it ranks as the third-highest-grossing film of 2024, only falling behind “Inside Out 2” and “Dune: Part II.”
As someone who grew up watching Marvel movies and always having a soft spot for both Deadpool and Wolverine, I was absolutely thrilled to see their latest adventure, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” land at No. 2 with an impressive £25.3 million in just eight days. Having followed the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years, it’s truly awe-inspiring to witness this dynamic duo make such an impact.
In third place, Disney-Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” continued its success with an additional £16.3 million, boosting its total to £51.2 million. Currently, it holds the title of the highest-grossing film of 2024 and is the sixth-highest earning animated movie in history in the market.
As a movie enthusiast, I recently found myself captivated by Warner Bros.’ “Twisters,” which sailed in at the fourth spot, raking up an impressive £9 million ($11.4 million). This box office success marked a remarkable career milestone for the talented British actress, Daisy Edgar-Jones. On the other hand, Blak Bear’s chilling horror production, “Longlegs,” wrapped up the top five with a staggering £6.2 million. Interestingly, it has now become the top-grossing original release of the month.
In the first month of release, “A Quiet Place: Day One” by Paramount earned the sixth position with a box office revenue of approximately £5 million, boosting its total earnings to £9.6 million. So far this year, it holds the record for the highest-grossing horror movie.
In the past month, Sony’s movie “Fly Me to the Moon” earned a revenue of approximately £1.6 million, placing it at position number 7. On the other hand, Sony’s film “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” garnered £1.3 million for the same period, landing at position number 8, with a grand total of £12 million so far.
Completing the list of the top ten films were “The Bikeriders” from Universal, earning £1 million, which ranked ninth, and Universal’s “MaXXXine,” bringing in £984,000 and placing tenth.
As we move forward into August, you’ll find a diverse selection of genres on your screen. From family fun with “Harold and the Purple Crayon” to action-packed adventures like “Borderlands”, heart-wrenching dramas such as “It Ends With Us”, edge-of-your-seat thrillers like “Trap”, chilling horror in “Alien: Romulus”. The fourth quarter is predicted to be bustling at the box office with eagerly awaited premieres like “Joker: Folie A Deux”, “Venom: The Last Dance”, “Paddington’s Peruvian Expedition”, sequel to “Gladiator” titled “Gladiator II”, musical sensation “Wicked”, and “Mufasa: The Lion King”.
