As a film enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of cinema over the past few decades, I can confidently say that Denzel Washington‘s career is nothing short of awe-inspiring. His upcoming roles in “Black Panther 3,” Steve McQueen’s project, and the Broadway production of “Othello” are testament to his enduring talent and commitment to his craft.

In an interview during the promotion of “Gladiator II” in August, Denzel Washington mentioned that there aren’t many films left for him to star in, given his successful and award-winning career. Now, he has disclosed that one of those remaining roles will be in “Black Panther 3.” During this conversation with Australia’s “Today,” Washington revealed that director Ryan Coogler is planning a part for him within the upcoming third installment of the Black Panther series. Alongside “Black Panther 3” and a new project by Steve McQueen, Washington will also be working on a movie adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Othello.

What matters most to me is the filmmakers. At this stage of my career, I’m focusing on collaborating with the top-notch ones. Frankly, I may not have many more films left to make. I’d like to explore new territories and try out things I haven’t done yet.

As a seasoned movie critic, reflecting on my illustrious career, I shared an intriguing glimpse into my future plans: “At 22, I breathed life into Othello on stage. Fast forward five decades, and here I stand, poised to reprise the role of Othello in a Shakespearean production alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, set to premiere on Broadway in February 2025. Post-Othello, I’ve been offered the chance to delve into the enigmatic mind of Hannibal. Subsequently, conversations with Steve McQueen have been ongoing for an upcoming film project. Intriguingly, Ryan Coogler is penning a role tailored for me in the sequel to ‘Black Panther.’ After that cinematic adventure, I’ll embark on another rendition of Othello. Following that, King Lear awaits my interpretation. And finally, when that chapter concludes, I shall bid adieu to the world of acting.

Although details about the Steve McQueen project are still secret, Netflix has revealed their support for Antoine Fuqua’s war film starring Denzel Washington as the legendary Carthaginian general Hannibal. Regarding “Black Panther 3,” Marvel Studios hasn’t confirmed it yet, but fans eagerly anticipate another blockbuster from Ryan Coogler considering the franchise’s success.

It would be a significant closure to have Denzel Washington appear in the next “Black Panther” film. Before his passing in 2020, Chadwick Boseman, the original star of “Black Panther,” shared that Washington once supported him financially by paying for his acting school one summer. So, we can say, “Denzel Washington played a crucial role in launching Chadwick Boseman’s career as ‘The Black Panther,’ and without him, there wouldn’t have been a Black Panther.

Boseman expressed his gratitude towards Washington during the AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony in 2019, stating that his success and achievements serve as a foundation upon which the rest of his cast can build. He acknowledged Washington’s countless victories, territories conquered, sacrifices made for the cultural advancement on film sets, and the principles he never wavered from, providing us with a roadmap to follow.
