Tensions apparently arose between Denzel Washington and an overzealous photographer during the red carpet event of Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest” at the Cannes Film Festival. Washington, who stars in the film and is working on his fifth project with Lee, hasn’t attended Cannes since 1993 when he was there for “Much Ado About Nothing.
A video published by the New York Post shows two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington angrily signaling at a camera operator and demanding him to halt. Upon his arrival, the photographer attempts to defuse the situation with a chuckle and places a hand on Washington’s shoulder. Washington shakes off the contact and once more instructs the photographer to desist. Photographers at Cannes are infamous for their loud behavior as they compete for celebrities’ attention.
(In this version, I aimed to maintain the original meaning while using a more conversational and easy-to-read style.)
EbMaster has reached out to Washington’s representative for comment.
The vibe in Washington picked up significantly when the “Highest 2 Lowest” premiere commenced. Prior to the film’s screening, the actor was unexpectedly bestowed with an Honorary Palme d’Or by Lee. During the event, Cannes festival director Thierry Fremaux presented a compilation of Washington’s films, such as “Malcolm X” and “Mo Better Blues,” both directed by Lee, along with his Academy Award-winning performances in “Glory” and “Training Day.
The film titled “Highest 2 Lowest” garnered a significant response at Cannes. It was met with a prolonged 5.5-minute standing ovation and received positive reviews, particularly from critic Peter Debruge of EbMaster. In his critique, he stated that the movie’s remarkable third act surpasses any doubts about its necessary update.
Under the direction of Lee, “Highest 2 Lowest” represents a contemporary English-language adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 film “High and Low,” originally directed by Kurosawa. In this updated version, set in present-day New York City, Washington plays a prominent figure in the music industry who finds himself embroiled in a perilous ransom situation.
“Highest 2 Lowest” will be released in theaters Aug. 22 and stream on Apple TV+ starting Sept. 5.
At the 78th annual Cannes Film Festival, I found myself engaged in what seemed like a rather intense conversation with Denzel Washington during the “Highest 2 Lowest” red carpet event, as captured by Getty Images.
