Denise Richards Is Ready to Be Asked Back on Housewives

In the ’90s, Denise Richards made a significant impact on the big screen by starring in numerous blockbuster movies. Her career started off strongly, but it could have fizzled out like many others. She battled aliens in “Starship Troopers”, took on James Bond in “The World Is Not Enough”, and engaged in a pool scene with Neve Campbell in “Wild Things” that became iconic for Gen-X audiences, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation. The cult classic “Drop Dead Gorgeous” is the only film her daughters have watched among her works. However, her career took a hit due to the media storm surrounding her contentious divorce from Charlie Sheen in 2005 while she was pregnant with their second child. Now, she’s seeing a resurgence on reality TV.

After the disappointing run of her 2009 series, “Denise Richards: It’s Complicated,” which lasted only two seasons on E!, she gained instant popularity upon joining “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” in 2018. However, during her second season, the other cast members turned against her, leading to another departure after two years. Now, she is merging elements from both shows for a new series titled “Denise Richards and Her Wild Things.” Premiering tonight on Bravo, this show follows Denise, her husband Aaron Phypers, and their three daughters: Sami Sheen, an OnlyFans performer at 20 years old; Lola Sheen, a 19-year-old hostess who is deeply religious; and Eloise Richards, a 13-year-old adoptee with developmental disabilities due to a chromosome disorder. The half-hour episodes are casual and entertaining, featuring many of Denise’s longtime Hollywood friends. However, her family life, especially her relationships with her daughters, is the series’ emotional core, which was a key factor in her decision to return to reality TV again.

This question asks about what’s new in your current reality TV experience compared to the previous ones. To be more specific,

Can you tell me something unique about this reality show that sets it apart from your past experiences?

asking for differences between the current reality TV show and previous ones. Additionally, I replaced “This is your third time doing reality TV” with “your past experiences” to make the sentence flow better.

Alex Baskin, who oversees Evolution Media (the producers of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and other Bravo shows), approached me following the Housewives series, and proposed the idea of creating a family-focused docuseries. I then discussed this opportunity with my family members to ensure everyone was comfortable participating. Sami exhibited enthusiasm, as she’s often expressed her desire for a reality show due to the unique dynamics within our family. Lola initially had reservations, but I made sure to emphasize that it would be a secure environment for her to take part in if she chose to do so.

Lola had some worries. She mentioned that she sought guidance through prayer, and I also explained that this is a valuable chance for the girls to express themselves independently, as they have often been identified as ‘Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen’s daughters.’ Furthermore, I pointed out that it’s inspiring to witness young adults confidently express their faith, so Lola saw this opportunity as appealing.

Given that each of your three daughters is unique in their own way, I was curious about the apprehensions you might have had regarding how they would cope and be portrayed within the unconventional realm of reality television, especially considering Eloise’s special needs and her fondness for being on screen.

Indeed, that’s correct! When she appeared on “Housewives”, we displayed those particular scenes and she grinned. She truly enjoys having her photo taken, appreciates the camera. And not only did she express interest in participating, but she also gave us a thumbs-up with enthusiasm.

My primary worry lies in their willingness to take risks, as there’s immense potential for positivity, but one must also brace oneself for critics and try to disregard negativity. Another point of concern was the potential challenges they might face, but given their wisdom, I believe they will handle it well. I admire their self-assurance and wish I had their confidence at their age. Back then, I was more timid and less experienced, and I anticipate they will manage this situation effectively.

How do you feel about your daughters not having watched many of your movies before? To be honest, it didn’t cross my mind much. I wasn’t the kind of mom to come home and make a big deal out of watching my films as a family. It simply wasn’t something we did together. In fact, they might not have even realized what I did for a living for a long time. They spent a lot of time on set, but mostly in the hair and makeup trailers, playing with makeup, wigs, clothes, and jewelry while I got ready. So, it seems likely that’s what they thought I did for a living for quite some time.

People discover some things through TikTok, as Sami pointed out when she found out that I was on “Friends.” She said, “I didn’t know you were on Friends!” To which I replied, “Yes, it’s actually a famous episode where my hair was featured.” However, it never crosses my mind to share all the details of my resume with them.

How did you convince Aaron to participate in this project despite his apparent dislike of Housewives during its second season? Well, initially, he appreciated the first season and supported me wholeheartedly. However, he empathized with my situation during the second season when my friendship with Lisa Rinna strained and some women on the show behaved in a way that was challenging. Interestingly, I enjoyed doing Housewives and would consider rejoining if given another chance. The dynamics changed for me during the second season, but overall, I found it an enjoyable experience and made new friends. In this particular project, he was fully supportive as it focuses on our family, which also appealed to him.

What made Housewives enjoyable for you?

Well, the trips were definitely a highlight. It can be quite challenging to find time for a girls’ getaway when juggling career, family, and personal life. But on these shows, we got the chance to let loose, enjoy ourselves, and forget about responsibilities – even if there was some drama along the way!

About Housewives, it seems you’ll be conversing with Erika Jayne this season on the show. Could you share what that experience was like for you? Well, during my first season, I sensed a bond between us, and it felt like we clicked. However, my second season took an unexpected turn, and I felt there were some unresolved matters. I was eager to talk things over with her, and I’m happy I did.

Will we get updates about your OnlyFans experiences on Denise Richards and Her Wild Things?
Yes, we share various aspects of our lives on the show. As for OnlyFans, I have full control over what I post there because I own it. Initially, I wasn’t aware of OnlyFans when Sami decided to join, but I soon learned about it.

In addition to reconnecting with some familiar faces such as Charlie’s former spouse Brooke Mueller and Tori Spelling, it seems you have a knack for maintaining friendships in Hollywood. I believe the key isn’t about having a secret, but rather about forming genuine connections. Even if we go long periods without seeing or speaking to each other due to our busy schedules and travels, we can always pick up where we left off. We all understand one another, which is not always the case with friends who aren’t in the industry. Navigating these friendships can be challenging at times too.

With Brooke, there’s no denying our relationship has had its challenges and peaks and valleys. In fact, we hadn’t spoken for a couple of years or more, but we recently rekindled our connection about two years ago, which I’m grateful for. She knows I’ll always be there for her and the boys, and I strive to maintain a harmonious and peaceful environment for all of us. Brooke is the mother of Sam and Lola’s brothers, and Charlie plays a significant role in our lives as well. It’s important that he supports the girls’ endeavors, and given that the show focuses on our lives, I’m glad viewers will see him too. Currently, things aren’t ideal, but they’ve never been smooth sailing; we’ll weather this storm and rise again.
