‘Deli Boys’ Star Poorna Jagannathan on How Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi Inspired Lucky Auntie

The “Deli Boys” would be nowhere without Lucky Auntie.

In the fresh Onyx Collective comedy, the central characters are Pakistani American brothers Mir (Asif Ali) and Raj (Saagar Shaikh). However, these two would be utterly lost without Lucky, portrayed by Poorna Jagannathan. Jagannathan effortlessly outshines in every appearance she makes, primarily due to her strong presence and impeccable comic delivery — yet, credit is also owed to her wardrobe for significantly contributing to her impactful performances.

Jagannathan remarked in an interview with EbMaster, “Luck has broad shoulders, she effortlessly bears the weight of the world on them… Costume designer Cailey Breneman drew inspiration from actresses such as Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi for our mood board. These iconic ’70s Bollywood stars defied expectations and were incredibly sexy and impressive.”

In an interview with EbMaster, Jagannathan stated, “Good fortune has strong shoulders, able to hold the world without breaking a sweat… Our costume designer, Cailey Breneman, looked to actresses like Zeenat Aman and Parveen Babi for inspiration. These trailblazing ’70s Bollywood stars were not only sexy but also groundbreaking.

Jagannathan may be a fresh face in the world of comedy, but she’s no stranger to comedic performances, having appeared in shows like “Never Have I Ever” and movies such as “Delhi Belly,” “Wolfs,” and more recently, “Deli Boys.” However, she openly acknowledges that mastering the unique rhythm of American comedy required some assistance.

She requested that writers like Lang Fisher, from ‘Never Have I Ever’, read the lines to her. This way, she could experience the humor directly. Since she’s not American and wasn’t raised on American comedy, the rhythm is slightly different compared to Indian comedy. It’s challenging for her, and she didn’t feel confident in her ability to get the timing right.

It’s rather unexpected that she struggles with self-trust, considering her knack for delivering hilarious scenes on “Deli Boys.” However, Jagannathan mentioned that beyond comedy, one of the main reasons for joining the show was to improve portrayals of South Asians in American media.

She expressed her thoughts by saying, ‘How can we transition South Asians from being the joke to being central characters? I’m passionate about this cause.’ She explained that she aims to portray every character with an Indian accent as a way to honor our unique cultural voice, which has often been ridiculed in the past.
