Decades Later, Mario 64’s Baby Penguin Is Still Doomed In Mario Kart World

As a die-hard Nintendo fan, I was absolutely thrilled by the latest Mario Kart World Direct presentation, jam-packed with exciting new details for the upcoming kart racer. But what really caught my attention amidst all the action was a clever nod to an iconic moment in Mario lore – and it’s all centered around a mischievous little blue penguin!

In the Free Roam segment, around the 12:04 mark, I was thrilled to witness the Penguin racer soaring off a cliff and gracefully plunging into the water beneath. Miraculously, the kart floated gently in the waves, allowing the cute penguin to continue his journey with a cheerful disposition. Contrasting with the expectations of old-school Mario fans back in 1996, when the baby penguin first appeared on Cool, Cool Mountain stage of Super Mario 64, this outcome was far more favorable than the initial anticipation may have suggested.

In this game, Mario must retrieve a small penguin hatchling for its mother, gaining him one of the 120 Power Stars as a reward. However, upon finishing the task and collecting the Star, some players discovered they could still play with the chick – only to accidentally drop it off a nearby cliff into the void, thus creating an internet meme sensation.

During the Mario Kart World Direct live stream, they showcased numerous fresh and familiar aspects such as novel tracks, new outfits for characters, and innovative maneuversone of them being the option to rewind if you fail a large jump. Moreover, it was affirmed that Battle Mode would be making a comeback, along with hints about Mario Kart World’s rendition of Rainbow Road.

The Mario Kart World is slated to debut on June 5th, and that’s also when Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to release, both on the same date.
