24 Studios is creating a film based on Death Stranding, but Hideo Kojima is also working on something new: an animated series adapting the critically-acclaimed video game.
Prior to gaining renown as a legendary video game designer and establishing the Metal Gear series, Kojima harbored aspirations for a career in filmmaking.
After several decades, his long-held aspiration is finally materializing. A film adaptation of Death Stranding is scheduled for release around 2027, and he aims even higher – to develop a unique entertainment experience that combines the elements of both a video game and a motion picture.
In an upcoming article for Vogue Japan prior to the release of Death Stranding 2, Kojima discussed bridging “the gap between films and video games” and his broader aspirations for Death Stranding – such as the creation of a fresh anime.
Hideo Kojima quietly announces Death Stranding anime
In his writing, he described that if the initial stage for Kojima Productions was about developing the intellectual property (IP) Death Stranding and making it available across multiple platforms, as well as creating films and potential sequels, then the subsequent phase involves creating projects where the distinction between games and movies becomes blurred as much as feasible.
For instance, consider a project that aims to blur the line between games and movies so much that viewers might mistake it for a film. We’re intending to achieve this by utilizing the same visual elements and creative minds behind a movie production.
The film adaptation of Death Stranding by A24 is currently underway, with Michael Sarnoski (known for Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One) taking the director’s chair, and Ari Aster (renowned for Hereditary and Midsommar) assuming the producer’s role.
Kojima pointed out that successful video game adaptations, such as The Last of Us, maintain the core storyline from the original version, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie leans more towards catering to the needs and preferences of game enthusiasts.
My goal is to create a unique cinematic experience for Death Stranding, one that could potentially garner recognition at prestigious festivals like Cannes and Venice. Interestingly, we’re also developing an animated version of the game.
