Death Stranding 3 won’t be made by Hideo Kojima

Approximately six weeks before the scheduled debut of Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, game director Hideo Kojima has disclosed some information regarding the upcoming third installment in the series. In an interview with VideoGamesChronicle, Kojima revealed that while he has a concept for Death Stranding 3, he doesn’t anticipate being part of its development. The sequel, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, is slated to premiere exclusively on PlayStation 5 on June 26th, 2025.

Kojima is not going to make Death Stranding 3, but he will pass it on to someone else

Hideo Kojima has earned a reputation as one of the most innovative creators in the gaming industry. He rose to fame by creating the Metal Gear series during the late 80s and early 90s. After some disagreements with Konami, he established his independent studio, Kojima Productions, which launched the first Death Stranding game about a decade ago. Now, Death Stranding 2 is almost here, but in recent years, Kojima has also unveiled plans for a horror game called OD, collaborating with Jordan Peele, director of horror films, and Xbox Game Studios. Additionally, there’s talk of a potential new Metal Gear series being developed in partnership with PlayStation and Physint.

Discussing the possibility of a third Death Stranding game is premature given that the second one hasn’t been released yet. However, considering Hideo Kojima’s extensive workload at present and his advanced age, it’s not surprising that he has given thought to this. With a long history in the gaming industry and being 61 years old, if a third Death Stranding game were to be developed, we might expect it to launch within five years, assuming he wasn’t also working on two other large-scale games. Moreover, Kojima has expressed interest in venturing into filmmaking, including a Death Stranding adaptation.

In an interview with VGC, Kojima expressed that he’s already devised a concept for another sequel. However, he won’t be the one to create it. Instead, if he were to hand over this idea to someone else, they might be capable of bringing it to life. Yet, it remains uncertain who will inherit this project. Given Kojima’s iconic status in video games, it would not be an easy task for anyone to carry on his legacy, as it is a formidable name and reputation to uphold.

In his discussion about the series’ future, Kojima hinted that if he incorporates the Plate Gate concept, it could lead to an endless series of sequels. The Plate Gates, a novelty in Death Stranding 2, enable the narrative to traverse numerous countries worldwide. While the initial Death Stranding was set in the U.S., it seems that the sequel will be based in Australia. If realized, the Plate Gates could transform future Death Stranding games into a globetrotting adventure. For now, we can only speculate about Kojima’s and his studio’s future plans.
