At the same time as they were trying to initiate work on the sequel, the COVID-19 pandemic was at its height, causing Kojima and his team to manage actors from afar since they couldn’t meet in person. As he put it, “I had my cast lined up, but during the pandemic, I thought it would be impossible for me to proceed with it.

As a gamer, I can empathize with Kojima when he shares his struggles during the pandemic. Not only did the pandemic magnify the challenges he faced, but his personal battle with illness added to the weight of uncertainty about his future as a game developer. He opened up about how these combined factors almost derailed the development of Death Stranding 2 altogether: “Working remotely, I found myself among the ill… I thought the world was ending. Despite my past experiences in creating games, Death Stranding 2 proved to be my toughest challenge yet.

Despite facing challenges from the pandemic and Kojima’s personal health issues, Kojima Productions persevered. These experiences instilled a fierce resolve within Kojima to bring the game to completion. For him, finishing development was not just about fulfilling his duties, but rather it felt like a crucial mission.
