In a recent statement, Dean Cain, known for portraying Superman in “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” from 1993 to 1997, expressed his disagreement with James Gunn’s approach to the DC Universe (DCU), referring to it as overly progressive or politically correct following some comments by Gunn likening Superman to the immigrant experience. It’s worth noting that Gunn started developing the DCU long after Cain donned the iconic Superman costume, nearly two decades prior.

Gunn’s DC Universe is about to ramp up with the arrival of “Superman,” featuring David Corenswet as the renowned Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The new film from DC Studios has been receiving a lot of favorable feedback, with viewers appreciating its vibrant setting, endearing characters, and contemporary storyline that seems to mirror real-world events.

In a somewhat contrasting stance, Cain has expressed disagreement with Gunn’s fresh interpretation of the renowned comic book hero, Superman. More precisely, he has criticized the director for likening Superman to an American immigrant.

The former Superman actor told TMZ, “How woke is Hollywood going to make this character:” 

What extent will Hollywood modernize this character? How significantly is Disney altering Snow White? Are these modifications being made to reflect contemporary times? For instance, Superman’s motto was “truth, justice, and the American way.” However, they changed it to “truth, justice, and a better tomorrow.”

This version aims to simplify the original sentence while maintaining its meaning and providing an example (Superman) to illustrate the concept more clearly.

As a devoted cinephile, I firmly believe that transforming Superman into a political figure might significantly harm the box office prospects of the upcoming film.

I don’t think it’s wise to alter cherished characters; if you’d prefer to introduce a new character, by all means, proceed… I believe James Gunn erred in attributing his decision to an immigrant issue, and I fear it may negatively impact the film’s performance. I was eagerly anticipating this movie. I can’t wait to see what it will be like… I hope it thrives, but I disapprove of that recent political statement.

Everything originates from a recent conversation between Gunn and The Sunday Times, where the director of Guardians of the Galaxy stated that Superman symbolizes “the narrative of America,” describing the character as an “immigrant who arrived from other lands and settled within the country.

In essence, Superman symbolizes the American spirit. He’s a foreigner who made our nation his home, but for me, it’s primarily a tale that emphasizes the importance of basic human compassion – a value that seems to be dwindling nowadays. Granted, its interpretation may vary. However, it’s about fostering compassion, and unfortunately, there will always be those who lack kindness and find offense in such a message, simply because it is about kindness. But let them think as they will.

On July 11th, you’ll find Superman flying into cinemas! In this latest adaptation, David Corenswet from Hollywood and Twisters fame portrays the main character, the Man of Steel. He faces off against the cunning supervillain Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult.

The upcoming movie, helmed by James Gunn who shares the CEO position at DC Studios, boasts a talented ensemble with Corenswet and Hoult among them, alongside stars like Rachel Brosnahan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and Edi Gathegi (for more on the Superman cast, check here).

For individuals finding controversy in James Gunn’s recent statements about Superman being an immigrant, it’s important to note that this perspective isn’t a fresh political addition to the character. Observe the essential nature of Superman. An extraterrestrial, he arrived on Earth at a tender age, was raised among humans, and chose to fulfill his obligation as our planet’s guardian, constantly facing criticism along the way.

It appears that many individuals worldwide are navigating through life as they settle into foreign lands, facing resistance from society at every turn and struggling to survive each day.

For the character, this isn’t a fresh revelation; it mirrors the longstanding analogy between the X-Men and real-life civil rights struggles. This theme has been evident in the comic books for many years now, but regrettably, some individuals seem unable or unwilling to recognize it.

Gunn’s “Superman” movie, himself, and the larger DCU have been criticized for releasing during a highly sensitive political time when people are quick to condemn the director, his film, and the entire franchise with minimal provocation.
