As a movie connoisseur with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the current box office scene is nothing short of exhilarating! The clash of titans like Deadpool & Wolverine and Despicable Me 4 is reminiscent of an epic Marvel versus DC battle.
In the second week since its release, I found myself part of the crowd who couldn’t resist Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” as it maintained its dominance at the U.K. and Irish box offices. The competition simply couldn’t stand up to our favorite pair.
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but share my excitement over the weekend success of the latest superhero blockbuster. It managed to earn an impressive £8 million ($10.1 million), pushing its total earnings to a staggering £33.4 million ($42.4 million). These numbers, fresh from Comscore, have placed it as the third highest-grossing film of 2024 in our region, trailing only behind “Inside Out 2” and “Dune: Part Two.” What a thrilling ride this cinematic journey has been so far!
In the second slot, “Despicable Me 4” from Universal continued to perform well, earning an additional £2.5 million, bringing its four-week earnings up to £30.8 million. Meanwhile, “Twisters,” distributed by Warner Bros., managed to stay in the top three, making £1.1 million in its third week and amassing a total of £10.1 million so far.
Disney once again triumphed as “Inside Out 2” maintained its strength during its eighth week, claiming the number four spot at the box office with a gross of £939,144. With this latest earnings, the movie’s total earnings now stand at an impressive £52.2 million.
In a striking debut, Sony’s book “Harold and the Purple Crayon” entered the charts at the fifth position, earning an impressive £641,548 in its first week.
Distinctive additions to the list were a re-release of “Spider-Man,” lasting for a week, that ranked seventh with £253,260, and the Blackpink concert film “Blackpink World Tour (Born Pink) in Cinemas,” which debuted at ninth place, amassing £93,518 during its initial weekend.
On August 9th, a vibrant mix of fresh movies will be debuting, offering movie-lovers a variety of choices amidst the ongoing competitive cinema market.
One of the highly awaited premieres includes M. Night Shyamalan’s suspenseful movie “Trap,” starring Josh Hartnett, which will be released by Warner Bros. across more than 300 cinemas. Additionally, Sony’s romantic film “It Ends With Us,” based on the popular Colleen Hoover novel and starring Blake Lively, Justin Baldoni, Jenny Slate, Hasan Minhaj, and Amy Morton, is expected to create a big impact.
Fans of sci-fi action and games can eagerly anticipate the movie “Borderlands,” based on the well-known video game series, which will star Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Edgar Ramírez, and Jamie Lee Curtis. The comedy film “The Instigators” by Doug Liman, featuring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck, is set to debut through Apple Original Films.
For family viewers, there’s something for everyone! Kaleidoscope Entertainment’s “Gracie and Pedro: Mission Impossible” boasts a star-studded cast featuring Bill Nighy, Susan Sarandon, Alicia Silverstone, Danny Trejo, and Brooke Shields. On the other hand, “Bluey At The Cinema: Family Trip Collection” is a big-screen adventure tailored for our younger audience members.
Art theaters across town will showcase “Sky Peals,” a film from BFI Distribution’s Venice lineup, as well as A24’s drama-fantasy titled “Tuesday,” starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lola Petticrew, and Leah Harvey.
