‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Slashes Competition as U.K., Ireland Box Office Hit $158 Million in August

As a seasoned movie connoisseur who’s been attending cinemas since the days of black-and-white films and popcorn that cost a penny, I must say August 2024 has been quite the blockbuster month! The U.K. and Ireland box office reaching its highest monthly total since July 2023 is nothing short of impressive. It seems we’ve got quite the knack for box office records here in the old country, doesn’t it?

In August, the U.K. and Ireland’s box office earnings totaled £120.2 million ($158.2 million), which is the highest monthly figure since July 2023’s record-breaking £160 million ($210.5 million) due to the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon. These figures are provided by Comscore. Compared to the same period in 2023, this year’s total is currently 12% lower, which is an improvement from a 15% deficit at the beginning of the month.

In a stunning box office performance, Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” raked in an impressive £29.7 million, bringing its total earnings to a whopping £55.3 million. This places the sequel as the third-highest earning R15 film, surpassed only by Warner Bros.’ “Joker” (£58.2 million) and Universal’s “Oppenheimer” (£59.7 million).

In 2024, Sony’s film “It Ends With Us” earned the second-highest box office revenue of £19.4 million, making it the seventh highest-grossing movie of the year so far. This romantic drama represents Blake Lively’s most successful U.K. release to date. Meanwhile, Universal’s “Despicable Me 4” took third place with an additional £16.9 million, bringing its total earnings to £45.2 million. The animated sequel is nearly reaching the lifetime grosses of its predecessors.

“Disney’s movie ‘Alien: Romulus’ made £11.5 million on its opening, placing it fourth and making it director Fede Alvarez’s most profitable film. It also became the highest-earning horror release of 2024 so far. Meanwhile, ‘Inside Out 2’, another Disney production, maintained its success by earning £7.2 million in fifth place, bringing its total to £58.4 million. This sequel is now the third-highest grossing animated film in the region.

In a recent showing, “Twisters” by Warner Bros. made an additional £5.2 million, bringing its total earnings to £14.2 million. Another Warner Bros. film titled “Trap” earned £3.7 million, whereas the 15th anniversary re-release of “Coraline” by Trafalgar Releasing brought in a profit of £3.2 million. Sony’s offering, “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” collected £2.9 million, while “Blink Twice” from Warner Bros. was among the top performers with a total of £2.2 million.

The first part of September will start with the Warner Bros.’ movie “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton and Jenna Ortega. Around mid-month, Universal’s horror remake “Speak No Evil” featuring James McAvoy, as well as Studiocanal’s war biopic “Lee” with Kate Winslet, will be released simultaneously. Additionally, Lionsgate’s film “The Critic,” starring Ian McKellen and Gemma Arterton, is also set to premiere during this period.

The month features the release of Signature Entertainment’s animated sequel “200% Wolf,” Mubi’s film “The Substance” in the genre of body horror, and both Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley star in it. Vertigo Releasing offers the animated fantasy “Dragonkeeper” for viewing, while Icon Film Distribution delivers the reboot of “Hellboy: The Crooked Man,” a blend of superhero and horror genres.

In September, “Megalopolis” directed by Francis Ford Coppola from United Artists Releasing and Lionsgate’s survival thriller titled “Never Let Go” will be released. The month concludes with StudioCanal presenting the drama film “The Outrun,” starring Saoirse Ronan.
