As a lifelong comic book enthusiast and someone who’s been following the box office trends for decades, it’s truly exhilarating to witness the phenomenal success of “Deadpool & Wolverine”. It’s like watching a superhero duo finally get the recognition they deserve! The movie has not only surpassed its predecessors but also established itself as one of the highest-grossing R-rated films in history. I can’t help but imagine Deadpool and Wolverine high-fiving each other, saying something like, “Looks like our ‘merchandise’ is doing quite well!”
“After two weeks in theaters, the dynamic duo of Deadpool and Wolverine continues to dominate at the box office, raking in an impressive $824 million worldwide.”
The upcoming sequel to the comic book, featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reprising their roles as their antihero characters, has already outearned both “Deadpool” (2016 – $783 million) and its sequel “Deadpool 2” (2018 – $786 million) in total box office revenue. Currently, “Deadpool & Wolverine” ranks as the second highest-grossing film of 2024, trailing only “Inside Out 2” ($1.555 billion), and is on track to become the third highest-grossing R-rated movie ever, following “Joker” ($1.07 billion) and “Oppenheimer” ($975 million). It’s projected to surpass the $1 billion mark within a few days.
Over the past weekend, I was thrilled to witness Disney breaking new ground as the first studio in 2024 to exceed $3 billion in global box office earnings. Remarkably, they achieved this feat with merely four nationwide releases. Among these were “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the anticipated sequel to “Inside Out,” “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (earning an impressive $397 million), and “The First Omen” ($53 million). In the coming months, Disney aims to maintain this success with the releases of “Alien: Romulus” (August 16), “Moana 2” (November 27), and “Mufasa: The Lion King” (December 20).
In the international box office, “Deadpool and Wolverine” grossed $110.5 million from 52 different countries. Excluding the U.S. and Canada, the top-grossing territories were China ($45.2 million), the United Kingdom ($42.4 million), Mexico ($32.8 million) and Australia ($24.6 million). The film is still performing well in premium formats such as Imax, which generated $17.5 million in global ticket sales over the weekend. To date, Imax has earned a total of $64.5 million from “Deadpool and Wolverine.”
In other international cinemas, neither M. Night Shyamalan’s “Trap” nor Sony’s family movie “Harold and the Purple Crayon” managed to connect with viewers.
In a disappointing turn, “Trap,” a chilling thriller starring Josh Hartnett as a serial killer, grossed just $4.4 million across 38 territories, bringing its opening weekend earnings to $20 million globally. Despite being one of the anticipated horror films this year, it failed to impress audiences, joining other recent releases like “The First Omen,” Blumhouse’s “Night Swim,” “Abigail” and Lionsgate’s “Imaginary” in underperforming at the box office. Typically, horror movies are reliable in terms of drawing crowds, but this year, they seem to have fallen flat with viewers.
Simultaneously, “Harold and the Purple Crayon” underperformed in 32 foreign countries, earning approximately $3 million. This lackluster performance occurred concurrently with the continued success of two popular children’s films, “Inside Out 2” and “Despicable Me 4.” These movies have been box office staples for weeks. “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” based on the same-titled children’s book, also faltered at the domestic box office, debuting with a disappointing $6 million. The film, featuring Zachary Levi as a man who can make his drawings come to life with a magical marker, had production costs of $40 million. To save its theatrical run, Sony now hopes that “Harold and the Purple Crayon” will continue to play in cinemas throughout the summer.
