‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Dominates U.K., Ireland Box Office With Highest Opening of 2024

As a seasoned cinema devotee with decades of film-watching under my belt, I must say that this past week’s box office results have been quite intriguing. The success of Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” is no surprise, as these characters always seem to draw in audiences. Seeing it outperform “Inside Out 2,” the previous highest opener of the year, is a testament to the enduring appeal of superhero team-ups.

In my experience as a movie critic, I was thoroughly impressed by Disney’s fresh take on “Deadpool & Wolverine” during its opening weekend. The box office numbers, as reported by Comscore, spoke for themselves with an impressive £17.3 million ($22.2 million) earnings in the U.K. and Ireland.

1. In the region, the superhero team-up movie seized the number one spot and broke records as the year’s biggest opener, significantly outperforming its closest rival. After three weeks, Universal’s “Despicable Me 4” continued to impress in second place with an additional £3.1 million for a grand total of £25.3 million. Meanwhile, Warner Bros.’ “Twisters” stayed put at No. 3, earning £1.5 million during its second week and accumulating a total of £7.9 million.

In its seventh week, Disney’s “Inside Out 2” maintained strong box office earnings and surpassed £50 million total revenue, bringing in approximately £1.1 million during the weekend, securing the fourth position.

In the third week, I contributed an additional £724,320, bringing my total earnings to a staggering £5.6 million, landing me in the top five. Moving further down the list, “A Quiet Place: Day One” from Paramount continued its run at number six with £168,232 and a grand total of £9.5 million. Lastly, the Tamil-language film “Raayan,” produced by Big Films Limited and featuring Dhanush as director and lead actor, made its debut at No. 7 with £149,511.

The lower ranks saw modest performances from Moviegoers Entertainment’s “Bad Newz” and Park Circus’ “I Saw The TV Glow,” each hovering around £59,000. Sony’s “Fly Me To The Moon” closed out the Top 10 with a £41,401 weekend take in its third week of release for a total of £1.6 million.

In the upcoming week, the U.K. and Irish cinemas have an intriguing array of fresh movies to offer.

As a passionate moviegoer and avid fan of timeless stories, I’m thrilled to share that starting this coming Wednesday, July 31, Sony will bring “Harold and the Purple Crayon” to life on the big screen. This much-loved adaptation is based on Crockett Johnson’s iconic 1955 children’s book of the same name.

On August 2nd, Friday, an exciting lineup of movies is coming our way. For K-pop enthusiasts, the much-awaited “Blackpink World Tour (Born Pink)” will be showing in cinemas. In a different genre, the animation movie “Kensuke’s Kingdom” grabs attention with its star-studded voice cast that includes Cillian Murphy, Sally Hawkins, and Ken Watanabe. This film is set to hit over 300 theaters for a broad release.

As a cinephile looking back on fond memories, I’m excited about the upcoming re-releases. Sony’s “Spider-Man” and Warner Bros.’ “The Neverending Story,” both celebrating significant anniversaries, bring back the nostalgia. For those who appreciate art house cinema, Curzon’s 4K reissue of Bela Tarr’s “Werckmeister Harmonies” is a must-see.

In the world of Bollywood enthusiasts, Bakrania Media announces the launches of two movies: the romantic tale “Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha,” starring Ajay Devgn and Tabu, and the espionage drama “Ulajh,” spearheaded by Janhvi Kapoor. Yash Raj Films brings forward a Malayalam-language found-footage thriller titled “Footage,” with Manju Warrier in the lead role. DJ Tech Ltd manages the releases of two more Indian films: the Malayalam drama “Adios Amigo,” featuring Suraj Venjaramoodu, Soubin Shahir, and Asif Ali, and the Tamil period survival thriller “Boat,” starring Yogi Babu.)

As a film enthusiast who has spent years immersing myself in the rich and diverse world of cinema, I am thrilled to share my excitement about two intriguing titles hitting the screens this weekend. The Tribeca-featured documentary “A Story of Bones,” distributed by Tull Stories, promises to be an enlightening journey into the depths of human history and resilience. Having had the pleasure of witnessing Tull Stories’ previous works, I am confident that this production will not disappoint.
