DC’s New Batman Is A Better Choice Than Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne

DC is moving forward with a new Batman for its upcoming shared universe, and it’s a smart decision. Robert Pattinson delivered a fantastic performance as the Dark Knight in the critically acclaimed 2022 film, The Batman. The continued excitement for the sequel, despite several delays, proves how popular his version of the character has become.

Just because Robert Pattinson is currently set to appear in The Batman 2 and a potential third film doesn’t mean he’s guaranteed to continue playing Batman in James Gunn’s new DC Universe. Gunn has repeatedly stated he doesn’t plan to carry Pattinson over, and that’s likely the right choice for the future of Batman within the DCU.

Why Replacing Robert Pattinson Is The DCU’s Best Batman Move

Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Batman is strong, capturing the character’s required grit and seriousness. However, the realistic and down-to-earth style of The Batman doesn’t easily fit into a larger DC Universe with more fantastical heroes like Superman or Green Lantern. Trying to force Pattinson’s Batman into that universe wouldn’t work, and having the same actor play a different Bruce Wayne specifically for the DCU would likely confuse audiences.

That’s why a fresh start with a new actor for Batman in the DC Universe feels right. Moving away from Robert Pattinson’s grounded, realistic portrayal and embracing a more fantastical version of the character is what Batman needs for DC’s future films. James Gunn has announced that the upcoming The Brave and the Bold movie, which will reboot Batman’s story, will include Damian Wayne, the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul.

This change distinguishes the main DC Universe Batman from Robert Pattinson’s version and allows for the introduction of more fantastical characters and storylines, like Ra’s al Ghul and the Lazarus Pits. As seen in the Creature Commandos animated series, the DCU’s Clayface is the classic, monstrous version from the comics, and Batman is depicted fighting Doctor Phosphorus, another villain with unrealistic abilities. This shift, replacing Pattinson’s grounded Batman with a counterpart who faces such threats, is a smart decision.

We won’t know who will play Batman in the new DC Universe until the script for The Brave and the Bold is completed. The script is currently being written by Christina Hodson, who also wrote The Flash. Once the script is finished, casting will begin. However, fans have already suggested several actors for the role, including Jensen Ackles, Alan Ritchson, and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Currently, younger actors are leading the casting discussions, with Brandon Sklenar, known for The Housemaid and 1923, becoming a strong contender – James Gunn has even publicly expressed his approval. Recently, Paul Anthony Kelly, from Love Story, has gained popularity among fans because of his striking resemblance to the comic book version of Bruce Wayne and his overall charm.

Besides these actors, Glen Powell is also a strong contender. He’s quickly become a highly sought-after star and has publicly expressed interest in playing Batman. Nate Mann is another possibility – a newer face who could bring something unexpected to the role. No matter who is chosen as the new Batman in the DC Universe, fans can expect a very different portrayal than Robert Pattinson’s, which is exciting.
