As a huge movie fan, it’s fantastic to see James Gunn so happy! And he absolutely deserves to be. He and Peter Safran are building something really special with the DCU – it’s not just live-action, but animation too – and it sounds like their vision for Superman is going to be amazing on all fronts.
As a critic, I’m keeping a close eye on all things Superman! We’re currently watching David Corenswet film his take on the iconic hero – it’s slated to hit theaters with Superman: Man of Tomorrow in 2027. Meanwhile, fans overseas are sadly seeing Season 3 of the animated series My Adventures with Superman pulled from HBO Max, which is a real disappointment.
The new animated series quickly became a hit on HBO Max, reaching the top 10 most-streamed shows in multiple countries within just 24 hours. This demonstrates that interest in superhero content is still strong and fans are looking forward to future projects from DC Studios, especially those planned for 2026 and beyond.
Superman Is Cooking Big-Time for James Gunn, DC Studios
Featuring Jack Quaid as Clark Kent—you might recognize him as Hughie from The Boys—My Adventures with Superman tells the story of Superman, Lois Lane (Alice Lee), and Jimmy Olsen (Ishmel Sahid) as they navigate various exciting adventures together.
Needless to say, some of those adventures end up being far more than they’d signed up for.
The show launched successfully on Adult Swim in 2023, and its first season received overwhelmingly positive reviews. It earned a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and that high rating still stands.
Season 2 received perfect scores from critics, and Season 3 continued this success, also earning a perfect rating when it premiered in 2026.
James Gunn Has Lots of Animated Fire in the Chamber for DC
DC animation fans have a lot to look forward to! Season 3 of My Adventures with Superman is just the beginning of James Gunn’s bigger vision for both the main DC Universe (DCU) and separate, alternate-world stories (DC Elseworlds).
James Gunn announced on Threads that Season 2 of Creature Commandos will follow soon after the release of Man of Tomorrow, with even more new content coming shortly after that.
As a huge animation fan, I’m already getting excited about what’s coming up! It looks like even when the next big animated film finally arrives – probably late 2027 or early 2028 – there are at least six other projects already in development or being planned. We don’t have firm release dates yet, but these are definitely on the way!
- My Adventures with Green Lantern
- Blue Beetle
- Mister Miracle
- Starfire (Elseworlds)
- DC Super Powers (Elseworlds)
- Caped Crusader Season 2 (Elseworlds)
It’s a great time to be a DC fan! With exciting projects like the upcoming Supergirl movie starring Milly Alcock on June 26th, the terrifying Clayface coming in October, and a wealth of other animated content, DC Studios – and DC Comics – seem poised to seriously challenge Marvel.
