One actor will play a whopping four different characters in James Gunn‘s DCU.
In Gunn’s DCU, approximately six heroes have been chosen for upcoming films that will debut both in cinemas and on Max within the following years. With more than ten projects already confirmed and many more expected in Chapter 1 and beyond, there are still numerous roles to be filled.
In line with his approach in previous Gunn films, DC Studios co-CEO has been willing to give some actors more significant tasks by allotting them multiple roles.
Alan Tudyk Confirmed for 4 DCU Reboot Roles
In the DC Universe’s initial two releases, Alan Tudyk will portray four distinct characters in both “Creature Commandos” and “Superman.” This versatile actor is most recognized for his roles in films such as “Moana,” “A Knight’s Tale,” and “Resident Alien.
Ahead are the four roles Tudyk will take on as the DCU expands:
Clayface
In James Gunn’s latest DC project, Alan Tudyk takes on the role of the well-known villain, Clayface – a metahuman capable of altering his form into any person he desires. This is an unusual twist for Tudyk, as he previously portrayed a more comedic version of Clayface in the series “Harley Quinn.
In the comic book series Creature Commandos, the villain Clayface is hired by Princess Ilana Rostovic for a double mission: to assassinate Aisla MacPherson and then impersonate her. He also comes close to killing Rick Flag Sr. and Eric Frankenstein, who manages to electrocute him before he flees the scene.
As for now, following the release of the Clayface movie scheduled for September 2026, no further appearances of the shape-shifting villain have been confirmed. It remains a mystery if Alan Tudyk will reprise his role in this film or if another actor will take it on instead.
Dr. Phosphorus
Alongside Clayface, Tudyk assumes a more frequent character in the “Creature Commandos” series, lending his voice to Alex Sartorius, a figure more commonly recognized as Dr. Phosphorus. This antagonist is a one-time Gotham City nuclear scientist who was deceived by Rupert Thorne and subjected to a radiation treatment device.
Through this transformation, he became a radioactive anomaly with lethal abilities, sending him into a madness that prompted him to wage a murderous campaign against Thorne’s crew. Subsequently, he was enlisted into the Creature Commandos and assigned to safeguard Princess Rostovic from Circe. However, as her secrets emerged, he ultimately betrayed the princess.
In the upcoming season 2 of “Creature Commandos,” it’s anticipated that Dr. Phosphorus will rejoin the group, having been gathered by The Bride into a fresh team lineup.
Will Magnus
In the third episode of Creature Commandos, Alan Tudyk plays Dr. Will Magnus, a character who appears briefly in a flashback. During the 1960s, the U.S. government provided Magnus with an old G.I. Robot for research. This robot later came back to life within Magnus’ workshop.
Robot 4
At CinemaCon 2025, it was officially announced that Alan Tudyk would be joining the cast of the upcoming DC Universe film, “Superman.” In this instance, Tudyk will lend his voice to the character known as Robot 4.
In this particular scene, Superman, wounded from a secret fight, is pulled along by Krypto. They head towards the Fortress of Solitude for healing. Among four robots, Tudyk’s Robot 4 assists in transporting him to the recovery room. To speed up his recovery (though it’s quite painful), they expose him to sunlight from Earth.
Fans will see more of Tudyk’s role when Superman hits theaters on July 11.
