DC Studios Developing Film Involving Batman Villains Bane and Deathstroke

As a seasoned movie enthusiast who’s witnessed the rise and fall of many superhero franchises, I must say this latest news about DC Studios focusing on Batman villains Bane and Deathstroke has me intrigued! It’s refreshing to see the spotlight shifting from the heroes to the villains. After all, they often make the best stories, don’t they?

Villains really are the new superheroes.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share the news that I’ve learned about an exciting new project brewing at DC Studios! Known for his work on “Captain America: Brave New World,” screenwriter Matthew Orton has been roped in to pen a film featuring two of Batman’s most formidable foes – Bane and Deathstroke. However, it’s early days yet, as there are no stars or director attached, and the studio heads, James Gunn and Peter Safran, have made it clear they won’t move forward until a polished screenplay is in their hands. So, let’s sit tight and watch this space for more updates!

The film is part of a popular pattern in the superhero genre where stories delve equally into both villains and heroes, similar to the ongoing HBO series “The Penguin”, Disney+’s series “Agatha All Along”, Warner Bros.’ upcoming sequel “Joker: Folie à Deux”, and Sony’s future Marvel adaptations “Venom: The Last Dance” and “Kraven the Hunter”.

Both Bane and Deathstroke have made appearances in earlier DC adaptations. Notably, Tom Hardy portrayed Bane in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises,” where he, a towering figure hidden behind a mask, ruled the criminal underworld. In this film, much like the iconic comic storyline “Knightfall,” he managed to break Batman’s back and held Gotham City captive. Prior to this, Bane served as a secondary antagonist in the 1997 movie “Batman & Robin,” played by professional wrestler Robert Swenson. Also, Shane West portrayed Bane on Fox’s Batman prequel series “Gotham.

Deathstroke, often referred to as Slade Wilson due to his superpowered abilities, is a frequent adversary not just for Batman but particularly for the Teen Titans. He’s been their main antagonist more often than not. Actor Joe Manganiello briefly portrayed this character in a post-credits scene from both “Justice League” (2017) and “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” (2021). In the TV series “Arrow,” Manu Bennett took on the role, while Esai Morales played Deathstroke in the Max series “Titans.

In 2018, Orton kicked off his writing journey with the Nazi hunter thriller “Operation Finale,” starring Oscar Isaac and Ben Kingsley. He also contributed as a writer and executive producer for the Marvel Studios series “Moon Knight” in 2022, and is set to co-write the upcoming thriller “Hostage” alongside Daisy Ridley and Clive Owen.

The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news about the movie.
