According to a recent report, DC has changed its plans and delayed James Gunn’s next movie, removing it from the early 2026 schedule. Despite a packed 2025, Gunn remains busy with the DC Universe in 2026, overseeing the upcoming Supergirl and Clayface films, as well as the highly anticipated Lanterns series on HBO Max (which was previously expected to launch the year).
Recent information suggests that the release of Lanterns may have been delayed. The host of The Lanterncast podcast shared an email conversation online (through Superman Saga News on X) with someone claiming to be a writer for The Hollywood Reporter. This exchange indicates the film’s release has been pushed from earlier in the year, potentially to as late as summer.
In a recent newsletter for The Hollywood Reporter, Aaron Couch and Borys Kit noted that the finale of Peacemaker Season 2 will be the last DC project connected to James Gunn’s work until the Supergirl movie arrives in June.
This final episode concludes the current run of shows connected to James Gunn’s vision, at least until ‘Supergirl’ arrives in June. However, the team at DC Studios is already hard at work on future projects.
The host of the Lanterncast noticed this detail and asked if it meant the Lanterns comic books were being released earlier than expected. They were told, “You’re very observant! Yes, we anticipate Lanterns will be published after Supergirl.”
Lanterncast: “That’s crazy! Are you guys going to put that out publicly at some point?
James Gunn, the head of DC Studios and an executive producer on the Lanterns series, had initially planned for the show to be released in Spring 2026. However, those plans have changed.
With a busy lineup planned for 2026 – including the finales of It: Welcome to Derry and Game of Thrones: Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, plus new seasons of Euphoria and Industry – the premiere of Lanterns might be delayed until late summer or even fall of next year.
Following the success of Peacemaker Season 2, Lanterns will be the DC Universe’s second live-action TV series. This new show centers around two Green Lanterns who team up to solve a series of disturbing crimes, taking their investigation from Earth to the far reaches of space.
Okay, so the buzz is building around this new series, and I’m already intrigued. It’s coming from some seriously talented people – Damon Lindelof, one of the masterminds behind Lost, and Chris Mundy, who brought us Low Winter Sun. They’ve cast Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler as the leads, and from what I understand, they’ll be playing the heroic team of Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Sounds promising, right?
Why Would Lanterns Get Pushed Out of Early 2026?

Right now, the idea of pushing back the release of Lanterns is just speculation, as no official changes have been confirmed. However, DC Studios might want to reschedule things for a few good reasons.
This probably isn’t about the show’s quality. So far, there’s been no indication the series is facing problems. Production on Lanterns wrapped up in early October, and finishing a large-scale superhero show that quickly is a very ambitious goal.
With so many major shows already planned for the first part of next year on HBO, there’s no need to release Lanterns immediately. Popular series like Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (a Game of Thrones spin-off) and Euphoria can launch the year strongly, allowing Lanterns to premiere later in the year when it can get more attention.
As a big DC fan, I’m really excited about getting more connected universe content! Right now, “Lanterns” is the only show we know is definitely coming after “Peacemaker” wrapped up its second season, and honestly, giving things a little breathing room between releases seems like a smart move. It’ll give fans time to enjoy each show fully, instead of feeling overwhelmed.
The additional time will help make sure the final product lives up to the high quality expected from its exciting and visually impressive branding.
