As a seasoned DayZ player with countless hours under my belt, I must admit that the Frostline DLC has left me feeling a bit disillusioned. The new map and content were highly anticipated, but upon release, it felt like more of the same. The lingering bugs and lack of unique content have been a major letdown, especially given the steep price tag.
DayZ has unveiled its long-awaited Frostline expansion for its main survival game, introducing a novel map and fresh content. Yet, the reception from players has been underwhelming. The game has experienced a wave of negative reviews on Steam, and surprisingly, the developers have addressed the criticism with their perspectives. Here’s a closer look at the situation below.
DayZ Developers Respond to Backlash After Frostline DLC Gets Review Bombed on Steam
On October 15th, DayZ launched its Frostline expansion, however, after a month of gameplay, players have expressed disappointment, which has noticeably impacted its Steam ratings. At the moment, the DLC’s recent review score is “Mostly Negative” and its overall rating is “Mixed.” The main reasons for this are the absence of exclusive content, ongoing bugs, and its cost. Players have criticized it as providing more of the same instead of a new and exciting experience.
Have you noticed that out of the 8 million Steam users with available data, on average they spent around 188 hours playing Dayz and collectively paid approximately $30 per user in gross revenue? This implies that for every hour of live online gaming we facilitate, we earn less than 10 cents. We provide and maintain the online infrastructure for this service…

In response to the criticism, Bohemia CEO Marek Spanel explained that the cost of their latest DLC, Frostline, has been under scrutiny due to its perceived lack of value compared to the cost. He highlighted that on average, players of DayZ have spent 188 hours and $30 on the game, with Bohemia earning less than 10 cents per hour in maintenance fees for the game’s infrastructure. This information has sparked controversy as some feel Frostline’s price tag of $26.99 is excessive given its content offering.
In response, there was a snippet from The Beatles’ song “Please Please Me” played, possibly a witty nod to fans demanding more content while seemingly underestimating the investment required for development. Many fans countered by stating that the price of $27 for older assets and limited new gameplay doesn’t seem warranted. At this point, it appears the discussion has reached a standstill, with both parties presenting legitimate concerns.
Bohemia hasn’t given any additional insights about the DLC yet, causing speculation among fans about its future development. Fingers crossed that the developers take player suggestions into account and enhance Frostline to satisfy expectations. We’ll keep tabs on the situation and share updates as more information becomes available.
