As a movie reviewer, I’m excited to share some updates on the shift in scheduling for the prestigious Daytime Emmy Awards and the News & Documentary Emmys. In years past, these events have graced our screens in June (with occasional adjustments due to unforeseen circumstances such as COVID-19 and Hollywood strikes). However, this year will see a change: The Daytime Emmys, known for their summer debut, are moving to October. On the flip side, the News & Documentary Emmys, which have always taken place in the fall, will be making their way to June instead. These adjustments promise to bring fresh excitement to our television viewing experience!
According to NATAS, one goal is to ensure the News & Documentary Emmys remain relevant as the content honored is often time-bound. Previously, these awards were annual and could only acknowledge the selected programs in September of the following year. However, this year’s changes will see the award ceremony happening in June instead.
Adam Sharp, NATAS president/CEO, stated that for about 50 years, the News & Documentary Emmys have been recognizing excellence in broadcast journalism and documentary production. By shifting the ceremony to an earlier position within the Emmy calendar, we’re emphasizing the relevance of the exceptional content being celebrated,” he added.
Indeed, due to the calendar-based nature of the Daytime Emmy Awards, they will have to postpone their accolades for a while. However, moving the event to October provides NATAS additional time to secure a new broadcast partner. Notably, CBS’ two-year contract to air the Daytime Emmys concluded last year, and it’s unlikely that CBS will renew its relationship. Interestingly, CBS has been the network to host the Daytime Emmys 18 times, more than any other broadcaster.
NATAS (National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences) has shared that further information regarding the 52nd Daytime and Creative Arts Emmy Awards in October will be disclosed at a later time. Notably, last year, “General Hospital” was triumphant at the Daytime Emmy Awards, claiming four awards, including the prestigious Outstanding Daytime Drama award.
This is the second significant change to the NATAS awards schedule this year, with the initial alteration being the announcement that the third annual Children’s & Family Emmy Awards will be held on March 15 in Los Angeles, contrasting with the previous two years which took place in December.
The 45th Annual Emmy Awards for News & Documentaries took place on September 25 and 26 this year; Jane Pauley and Alex Gibney received Lifetime Achievement awards. Due to changes in the ceremony date, here is an updated schedule for this year’s event:
