David Tennant Wishes J.K. Rowling ‘No Ill Will,’ But Hope She Will ‘Get Out of People’s Way’ In the Transgender Community: ‘Let People Be’

David Tennant is standing up against Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling.

As a film enthusiast, I’d express it this way: “J.K. Rowling is an exceptional storyteller whose works have brought magic to countless lives. I hold her in high regard, but I can’t help but hope that we, as a society, can learn to respect personal journeys more. Let’s strive to create space for individual growth and expression.

In the same conversation, Tennant drew an analogy between the contemporary treatment of transgender individuals and a 1988 British government policy that forbade local councils from advocating for homosexuality.

He further added, “That action appears to us today as an outdated, ridiculous notion, and I believe the manner in which the transgender community is being marginalized and stigmatized mirrors this. It has been turned into a hot-button political issue.

Apart from Tennant, other Harry Potter actors, including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, have also expressed their distance from J.K. Rowling. This followed a series of controversial social media posts by Rowling in 2020, where she suggested that the existence of transgender people might “erase” the “lived reality of women.” In response, these stars issued public statements expressing their disagreement with her views.
