As a long-time Shakespeare enthusiast with a soft spot for modern adaptations of classic plays, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming cinema release of “Macbeth,” starring David Tennant and Cush Jumbo. Having had the privilege to watch several interpretations of this timeless tragedy, I can confidently say that this production, with its innovative take and powerhouse performances, promises to be a must-watch for any theater or Shakespeare fan.
The highly praised West End play of “Macbeth,” featuring David Tennant and Cush Jumbo, will be shown in cinemas throughout the U.K., U.S., Australia, and selected international locations. This adaptation, helmed by Max Webster, is currently drawing crowds to London’s Harold Pinter Theatre due to its success.
In a fresh interpretation of William Shakespeare’s timeless story of affection and regicide, Tennant portrays Macbeth, while Jumbo assumes the role of Lady Macbeth. An early sneak peek at the filmed adaptation—recorded during its staging at the Donmar Warehouse last year—features a powerful performance by both actors in Act 1, Scene 7, where they plot Duncan’s, the King of Scotland’s, assassination to pave Macbeth’s path to the throne. You can view the clip here above.
Beginning February 5, 2025, the play “Macbeth” will be showing in cinemas, a presentation by Trafalgar Releasing together with Donmar Warehouse. You can purchase your tickets starting October 16 at MacbethDonmarCinema.com.
Marc Allenby, CEO of Trafalgar Releasing, expressed delight about collaborating with Donmar Warehouse again to share their full house ‘Macbeth’ performance in cinemas nationwide in the U.K., as well as worldwide. He noted that theater remains a vital contributor to cinema ticket sales and is an essential focus for Trafalgar Releasing as they expand their diverse collection of culturally rich content designed exclusively for the big screen.
Tim Sheader, artistic director at Donmar Warehouse, and Henry Finch, its executive director, expressed their joy that their unique production of “Macbeth” will extend its reach to audiences beyond the initial run at the Donmar and in the West End. They are thrilled at the prospect of thousands of viewers worldwide getting to enjoy this exceptional cast and the cozy atmosphere of the Donmar on their local cinema screens.
Having garnered much acclaim during its stint at the Donmar Warehouse, the “Macbeth” production by Tennant and Jumbo moved to the Harold Pinter Theatre, commencing on October 1 and running until December 14. Apart from Tennant and Jumbo, the filmed adaptation of “Macbeth” at the Donmar features Moyo Akandé, Annie Grace, Brian James O’Sullivan, Casper Knopf, Cal MacAninch, Kathleen Macinnes, Alasdair Macrae, Rona Morison, Noof Ousellam, Raffi Phillips, Jatinder Singh Randhawa, Ros Watt and Benny Young. In this new location, I’m looking forward to experiencing the thrill of the play once more.
