I was thrilled to learn that David Spade discussed the possibility of a “Tommy Boy” sequel on Theo Von’s podcast. However, as a devoted fan and knowing the deep bond between David and Chris Farley, who tragically passed away in 1997, it’s heartening to hear that he swiftly turned down the idea. After all, “Tommy Boy” was more than just a movie; it was a testament to their unique, comedic friendship that blossomed during their five-year stint as “SNL” co-stars.
Spade mentioned he was proposed an idea for ‘Tommy Boy 2’, but with their children as the main characters instead. He shared that this suggestion came two years ago, and he struggled to envision it without Chris Farley, who was the heart of the original film. Spade felt it would be too much of a compromise. He couldn’t picture it. No one could take on that role. Instead, the story was about their kids and helping them navigate their own journey. However, he emphasized that the idea was all about Chris Farley. If they had made another film then, it would have been fantastic.
As a devotee, I recall “Tommy Boy” where Chris Farley played an unpolished heir to an auto empire, following his father’s demise. Joining forces with Spade’s savvy accountant, I embarked on a journey to safeguard our family business. Though the film didn’t set the box office alight (earning merely $32 million globally), it eventually found fame as a cult favorite due to its home video release. Not long after, Spade and Farley teamed up once more for “Black Sheep.” In an interview with Esquire magazine in 2022, Spade shared that we had been contemplating another movie together before Farley’s untimely passing.
Two years following the release of ‘Tommy Boy’, we learned it had earned $100 million in video sales, which left us astonished. Over time, its success became apparent. There were discussions about creating a sequel, but Farley expressed a desire for more dramatic roles, so I encouraged him to pursue that. I met him two months before his passing and he mentioned how people often spoke of ‘Tommy Boy’ and ‘Black Sheep’. He longed for another opportunity to work together. I think about Farley daily. I still have his coat from ‘Tommy Boy’.
Spade noted that in their comedic act, Farley enjoyed him being intelligent while he was less so. The two were constantly joking around, with Farley often asking Spade to mock him because he found it incredibly amusing. They built their act around this dynamic. Although Farley appeared large, he wasn’t overly heavy. He grew significantly larger towards the end of his life. Despite claiming to be overweight, he was far from excessively so.

Spade shared that in their comedy routine, Farley enjoyed him being smart and himself less intelligent. They were always joking around, with Farley often asking Spade to make fun of him because it made him laugh a lot. Their act relied on this contrast. While Farley seemed large, he wasn’t obese. However, towards the end of his life, he did gain weight significantly. Contrary to what he said, he wasn’t particularly overweight.
