David Fincher’s Mindhunter: The Chilling Sequel to Zodiac Unveiled

A good number of years following the mysterious Zodiac case portrayal in the film, David Fincher delved into multiple serial killers in his Netflix series titled Mindhunter. Fincher’s interest in mass murder has been a constant throughout his career. The first movie where he had creative control after his setback on Alien 3 was Se7en.

In contrast, John Doe was a fictional serial killer who was apprehended, whereas the Zodiac was a genuine murderer who eluded capture, making the latter far more unsettling. Despite being underestimated initially, Zodiac is now widely recognized as one of Fincher’s finest films. Mindhunter, like Zodiac, serves as a spiritual sequel for Fincher and delves into another haunting true-crime tale.

David Fincher’s Mindhunter Was Released 10 Years After Zodiac

Mindhunter Goes Back To The Early Days Of Profiling Serial Killers

2017 saw David Fincher overseeing the production of “Mindhunter” as an executive producer, guiding it through to its television debut. The series was initially conceptualized by Joe Penhall and is based on the 1995 true-crime book “Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit” written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. In essence, Fincher served as the show’s main director, directing more episodes than any other individual, and essentially functioning as its head writer or primary creative lead.

In the late 1970s, a group of three FBI agents – Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv – come together to establish the Behavioral Science Unit. Their work involves delving into the early cases of serial killers, thereby laying the groundwork for criminal profiling. They begin to observe distinct patterns in these criminals’ behavior and are credited with coining the term “serial killer.

The series doesn’t only delve into the lives of some notorious 20th-century serial killers; it also investigates the psychological consequences of working with such disturbed minds as a regular job. Groff’s character experiences panic attacks, Torv’s character finds it difficult to maintain normal human interactions, and McCallany’s character’s son is affected by his gruesome occupation.

Mindhunter Was A Spiritual Successor To David Fincher’s Crime Thrillers

It Chronicles The History That Led To Stories Like Zodiac & Se7en

As a fan, I can’t help but admire how the next logical progression for David Fincher was to delve deeper into the world of criminal psychology, as he did with Mindhunter following his exploration in Se7en and his focus on the Zodiac killer. It’s truly unfortunate that Netflix decided to end Mindhunter after only two seasons, denying us the chance to see its full potential unfold. However, in the episodes we have, it’s nearly flawless – not a single weak episode to be found.

Mindhunter skillfully expands on its characters by delving into their investigation of serial killings, offering a more in-depth exploration of the psychological impact of such obsession compared to Zodiac. It delves further, examining a broader spectrum of killers, from Charles Manson to Son of Sam. Essentially, Mindhunter seems like an extension or sequel to the themes explored in Zodiac.
