As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement over the recent casting news! After extensive auditions for the iconic role of Superman, it seems like Hollywood’s David Corenswet was the top contender on everyone’s lips. And boy, did he prove us right when he was officially cast as our brand-new Man of Steel!
When James Gunn called to offer him the part, Corenswet admitted he was in a “suspicious mood,” but his reaction to the offer is something I can’t wait to see. He reportedly said something hilariously humble and endearing to the director, and I can’t help but feel a warm fuzzy feeling inside at the thought of it!
It’s possible to contend that David Corenswet was fated to become part of the illustrious group of actors portraying Superman. This theory could be supported by a trending post, as Corenswet’s character River Barkley in Politician was told he bore a resemblance to Superman on the show. However, Corenswet wasn’t expecting his destiny when a crucial choice was being presented to him directly. In an interview with his co-star Nicholas Hoult for Wonderland Magazine, Corenswet admitted that he felt doubtful once he secured his role during the filming of Twisters.
In Philadelphia during summertime in 2023, I took a pause from Twisters. At home, I was engrossed in an exhilarating, mysterious phone call when my screen displayed an unfamiliar number with the 310 area code.
Did you know this trivia for budding actors and actresses? A call from a 310 area code originates in Los Angeles, so consider it as Hollywood reaching out with potentially positive news. As Nicholas Hoult listened to David Corenswet’s tale, he wondered if his fellow actor had actually picked up the phone. Remarkably, even without identifying the number, the Juilliard graduate responded:
And I said, very politely, ‘Uh, pardon me, I think I need to take this phone call.’
In a candid conversation, Nicholas Hoult shared with his co-star in “Pearl” that he rarely responds to phone calls from unknown numbers. Similarly, I also tend to follow this pattern; if it’s significant, they can always leave a voicemail instead.
David Corenswet, who typically remains consistent, was confident that it was only a matter of time before he received a call regarding his involvement in the 2025 movie release, following his screen test. This is reminiscent of Nicholas Hoult’s experience, as he too auditioned for the Man of Steel role prior to landing Lex Luthor. In jest, David suggested that perhaps the mysterious “no caller ID” numbers were the reason he didn’t secure the main role!
In the end, David Corenswet picked up the phone, and it seemed as if destiny itself was speaking – it was James Gunn. Yet, the actor from “Look Both Ways” wasn’t entirely sure that the director of “Guardians of the Galaxy” was on the other end of the call.
In other words, when I excused myself to take a call, James Gunn, the director of Superman, called out to me, ‘David, this is James Gunn.’ To which I replied, ‘Could you provide proof?’ As I found myself in a rather skeptical state.
It’s understandable why David Corenswet might have been confused, given that advanced AI technology can mimic voices and even create deep fakes resembling a person’s appearance on video. This makes it incredibly simple to play tricks these days. In fact, when Corenswet received the call about screen-testing for an upcoming DC movie, he initially suspected it was a prank because he had previously mentioned this to others.
Hoults reaction was one of astonishment when Corenswet inquired about verifying James Gunns identity. Upon asking Corenswet if this actually happened over the phone, here’s what the main star of Superman replied:

As a movie buff, I find myself utterly intrigued by the way David Corenswet managed to make James Gunn verify his identity. In moments like this, it’s hard not to fantasize about having supernatural abilities that would let us know who’s on the other end when Caller ID falls short.
