In the small town of Woodsboro, it’s me who’s thrilled to announce that a familiar face is returning – none other than David Arquette, reprising his beloved role as Deputy Dewey Riley! The chilling seventh chapter in the “Scream” franchise is about to unveil this horrifyingly exciting news.
As a die-hard fan of horror cinema, I must admit that I was taken aback when I learned about the miraculous resurrections happening in the “Scream” universe. Initially, it seemed implausible to me since Dewey, who met his tragic end by Ghostface’s knife in the fifth film, “Scream” (2022), was supposedly dead and gone for good. But lo and behold, it turns out that Mikey Madison’s Amber Freeman was the one behind the mask!
However, Dewey isn’t the only character coming back to life in this chilling saga. Scott Foley and Matthew Lillard are also poised to breathe new life into their late characters for Spyglass and Paramount Pictures’ “Scream 7.” This revelation has left me on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating what twists and turns this iconic franchise will take next!
In addition to the original cast members Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown, newcomers Mckenna Grace, Celeste O’Connor, Joel McHale, Asa Germann, Sam Rechner, Anna Camp, Mark Consuelos, and Ethan Embry are also joining the cast of “Scream”.
Besides Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown, several fresh faces including Mckenna Grace, Celeste O’Connor, Joel McHale, Asa Germann, Sam Rechner, Anna Camp, Mark Consuelos, and Ethan Embry are also set to feature in the upcoming “Scream” production.
Previously, Cox had voiced her wish that screenwriters could somehow resurrect Dewey (the husband of her Scream character Gale Weathers): “I get why they made the decision, but boy! What a character to lose,” she remarked. “Dewey is deeply cherished by Scream fans. They need to find a solution for him.
Kevin Williamson, the original author of “Scream,” will be making his directorial debut for the movie series with the seventh installment, which is set to hit theaters on February 27, 2026.
In a chat with EbMaster in February, Gooding hinted at what fans might anticipate from the upcoming movie, stating, “It seems like a magnification of what’s been before, and the fact that Kevin Williamson, who penned the original script, is back to direct now is a testament to this. I believe Ghostface is more ruthless than ever. While I don’t want to reveal too much, there are some things they do to the human body in this film that I feel like Kevin is pushing the boundaries with.
Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, who played leading roles in the initial films of the “Scream” reboot, will not be part of the seventh movie. Last year, Melissa Barrera was let go from “Scream 7” due to some controversial posts on social media about Israel. Subsequently, it was announced that Jenna Ortega would not be able to join the project because her busy schedule with Netflix’s “Wednesday” series prevented her from doing so.
Last weekend, Patrick Dempsey informed EbMaster that although he had wished to reprise his role as detective Mark Kincaid in “Scream 7”, scheduling conflicts along with the ongoing wildfires prevented it from happening.
Deadline was first to report the news of Arquette’s casting.
