Dave Portnoy’s Pizza Review Turns Tiny Eatery Into Overnight Sensation

A pizza critique by Dave Portnoy sparked a surge of new patrons at a 40-year-old eatery located in New Orleans.

Since Dave Portnoy began evaluating pizzas from various global eateries back in 2017, his “One Bite Pizza Reviews” have gained widespread popularity.

Despite repeatedly claiming that he rates the pizza a 0/10, with 10 being the highest score, Portnoy tends to quickly finish off his slices instead. On various occasions, the shop’s proprietor is close by on the sidewalk outside the eatery, eager to catch his critique of their pizza.

At times, Portnoy’s candor lands him in trouble with the chef. However, on other occasions, his actions have managed to restore the restaurant’s image and attract even more clients to its location.

Following his review of Gio’s Pizza on February 4th, the pizzeria based in New Orleans reported an overwhelming influx of calls to their phone line.

Travis Posey, owner of Gio’s Pizza, stated that the phone was constantly ringing incessantly,” he added, “because the line of customers waiting extended beyond the capacity of the telephone.

Despite varying their opening times each week, the proprietors of Gio’s Pizza continue to cater to hundreds of customers every day.

Travis mentioned that we’re operating on a day-by-day basis, which can seem chaotic. Due to the fact that all our offerings are handmade, from scratch, we adjust our opening hours as needed. This includes making our own dough and sauce.

As a devoted pizza enthusiast, I’d rate that cheesy slice a 7.6, reminiscent of the classic “bar pies” you’d find in the NYC and NJ neighborhood joints that I frequent.

According to Portnoy, this is exceptional. I’m inclined to think that it won’t get any better in Louisiana. Interestingly enough, he compared it to the quality you’d find in New York or New Jersey. In other words, this is truly impressive, top-notch material.

In December 2024, Portnoy’s review of Baltimore’s Tiny Brick Oven Pizza, titled “One Bite,” provided a significant boost for the restaurant. Facing closure due to financial struggles, the owner received a $60,000 donation from Portnoy, allowing the restaurant to stay open for at least another year.
