‘Daughter’s Daughter,’ a Tale of Surrogacy, Motherhood and Same Sex Relations, Strikes Sales Ahead of Toronto Film Festival Debut (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned film enthusiast with a keen eye for thought-provoking narratives and a heart that resonates deeply with stories of human resilience, I find myself eagerly anticipating the premiere of “Daughter’s Daughter” at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. The pedigree of this film, with its esteemed directors, producers, and cast members, promises an emotional rollercoaster that delves into the complexities of family, love, and identity, particularly within the LGBT community.

The Taiwanese production company, Andrews Film, has secured the international distribution rights for the dramatic film titled “Daughter’s Daughter,” prior to its debut in the Platform section of the Toronto International Film Festival.

The movie is helmed by Huang Xi (“Missing Johnny”), with an impressive lineage stemming from its executive producers Hou Hsiao-hsien and Sylvia Chang. Notably, the film features Taiwan stalwart Sylvia Chang as one of its stars, alongside Karena Lam and Eugenie Liu, who was previously seen in “Old Fox”.

This movie tells the story of a 60-year-old woman who must face difficult decisions after her daughter’s tragic accident. It turns out that she is in charge of an IVF embryo created with her deceased daughter, which leads her to seek out the daughter she gave up for adoption as a teenager. As she grapples with past regrets and newfound responsibilities, the film also explores the intricate issues surrounding reproduction within the LGBT community.

I’m thrilled to share that the movie I’ve been involved with is a production by Sun Lok Productions. It’s also worth mentioning that we received financial backing for this project from TAICCA, which represents the National Development Fund. I’m proud to announce that Andrews has successfully secured the first sale, even before our world premiere at Toronto, to none other than Edko Film based in Hong Kong.

The film’s success is also due to the impressive performances of Alannah Ong, Winston Chow, and Tracy Chou. The producers are Shao Dongxu and Lu Hsin-li. Yao Hung-I handled the cinematography. Credits for sound go to Agnes Liu and Chu Shih-yi, while Kay Huang, Liang Angu, and Mukio Chang composed the music. Liao Ching-Sung and Jerry Kao were responsible for film editing, and Hwarng Wern-ying served as production designer, with Shirley Kao handling costume design.

Since their collaboration on Hou’s 1996 film “Goodbye South, Goodbye,” Director Huang has been closely associated with Hou. His personal work revolves around modern urban connections, solitude, and random occurrences. His debut as a solo director in 2017 with the movie “Missing Johnny” was showcased at Busan, Tokyo FILMeX, HK Asian FF, and won accolades at the Taipei festival and the Golden Horse Awards. His 2022 TV series for HBO, titled “Twisted Strings,” also starred Sylvia Chang. This production delved into the comedic and absurd aspects surrounding death and longing.

In 2019, Taiwan became one of the pioneers in Asia by legally recognizing same-sex marriages. However, challenges persist beyond this milestone.

In Taiwan’s path towards legalizing same-sex marriage, many compelling tales have emerged. However, it’s important to recognize that these matters go beyond just marriage; they delve into more intricate and contentious issues. One such issue is In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), which affects a larger demographic than one might initially think, not solely the LGBT community. Hwang expressed a desire to narrate a story revolving around this contemporary subject, viewing it from the standpoint of a mother, a woman, or even from a humanitarian perspective.
