As I eagerly await the premiere of “Dark Winds” Season 3 on March 9, I’m thrilled to share that the show has already been greenlit for a fourth season! It’s exciting news for fans like me who can’t get enough of this gripping series.
The show is set in the 1970s and features Zahn McClarnon as Native American Tribal Police lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, who works alongside officers Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) and Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) to unravel the complexities of violent crimes on their reservation. The upcoming Season 3 will resume six months after the events of Season 2, with Leaphorn and Chee delving into the mystery surrounding the disappearance of two boys, leaving behind only a deserted bicycle and a blood-stained piece of ground as clues. Meanwhile, Manuelito discovers a human and drug smuggling conspiracy while adjusting to her new role within Border Patrol, some 500 miles away from home.
McClarnon will make his directorial debut during Season 4, which will air in 2026.
Graham Roland is the mind behind the television series “Dark Winds,” inspired by Tony Hillerman’s “Leaphorn & Chee” novels. John Wirth takes on the role of showrunner, while executive producers include Roland, Wirth, Zahn McClarnon, Robert Redford, George R.R. Martin, Chris Eyre, Tina Elmo, Jim Chory, Vince Gerardis, and Anne Hillerman.
When we initially approved the first season of ‘Dark Winds,’ we recognized its potential for creating an authentic and long-lasting series, complementing the universes we were developing alongside ‘The Walking Dead’ and Anne Rice. This talented cast and creative team have indeed delivered on that promise, with fans showing their appreciation. The foundation is laid by Tony Hillerman’s memorable novels, nurtured by a production team including Robert Redford, George R.R. Martin, Chris Eyre, our showrunner John Wirth, and at the heart of it all, the remarkable Zahn McClarnon and the entire cast. The series has garnered significant fan support on AMC/AMC+, even reaching the Top 10 shows on Netflix for a substantial period last fall. There is much more captivating storytelling to unfold in the extended third and fourth seasons.
McClarnon expresses his eagerness to delve into the role of Joe Leaphorn once more in Season 4, and he’s eager to make his directorial debut on a show that holds great significance for him,” stated McClarnon. “I want to extend my gratitude and admiration to Kristin Dolan, Dan McDermott, and everyone at AMC Networks for their backing and dedication to ‘Dark Winds.’ Of course, I’m most excited to be reunited with this exceptional cast and crew who I hold dear.
Wirth expressed gratitude towards Kristin Dolan, Dan McDermott, and everyone at AMC Networks for their unwavering support of our small series. I can confidently say that our talented writers, exceptional actors, and hardworking crew all share my enthusiasm and motivation to delve deeper and expand the universe of Dark Winds in a potential fourth season.
