Title “Daredevil: Reborn” faces a similar challenge as Spider-Man, which unfortunately undermines one of the key aspects that sets the Marvel Cinematic Universe apart.
In case you haven’t been following recent developments about Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), you might have missed the latest update on the upcoming Marvel series. As per statements from Marvel Executive Brad Winderbaum, it seems that Spider-Man won’t be featured in any of the Disney+ live-action programs.
According to Winderbaum, Sony possesses the rights for full-length television shows featuring Spider-Man. He mentioned that these could potentially be half-hour animated series.
For Marvel, particularly in their strategy for Daredevil: Born Again, there arises a challenge due to their ambitious schemes for the villain Wilson Fisk, also known as The Kingpin. If you’ve followed Echo, it’s clear that Kevin Feige and other MCU masterminds have big ideas for this supervillain.
The Devil’s Reign
They intend to rework arguably his most remarkable modern tale, Devil’s Reign. In this comic series, the crime kingpin shifted from the criminal underworld to the realm of politics, basking in the glare of New York City’s bright lights. Fisk eventually ascended to the position of Mayor and leveraged his newfound political authority to target the superhero community, employing persecution as a tool.
The run was exciting and the narrative was captivating, and given how Born Again trailers suggest it struck a chord with the writers on the latest Daredevil installment, it’s apparent that this tale has resonated deeply. Considering Fisk will become New York’s mayor in the series, which undoubtedly sets him against Daredevil, many, including me, believe that elements from Devil’s Reign are being incorporated into the storyline.
However, it’s worth noting that if Marvel chooses to follow this path, their cinematic interpretation of the tale might seem less impactful without the inclusion of other heroes. The reason being, in the comics, when Fisk was elected mayor, his influence over numerous Marvel heroes residing in New York City made him such a formidable adversary and contributed significantly to the story’s lasting appeal.

Originally, the characters such as the Fantastic Four, Captain America, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Moon Knight, Doctor Strange, and of course, Spider-Man, reside in New York City and found themselves endangered by Fisk’s vengeance. The fear that Fisk could potentially harm any one of our cherished superheroes is what intensified the danger and tension in Devil’s Reign.
Now, if Daredevil: Born Again intends to follow Devil’s Reign, it might struggle due to the absence of characters like Spider-Man, who should be affected by Fisk’s actions but won’t be because Sony and Disney have yet to cooperate. The situation is further complicated as Spidey isn’t the only hero impacted in this way.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to admit that it seems pretty unlikely for Doctor Strange to pop up in the show, given that Benedict Cumberbatch is a man in high demand and Marvel tends to save their big guns for more significant storylines. And honestly, I’m not holding my breath for Captain America, Hulk, or Thor to make an appearance either. It’s all speculation at this point, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
The Spider-Man Problem
The issue at hand, which I’ve nicknamed “The Spider-Man Dilemma,” symbolizes the collision between the authenticity of the film industry and the mythical concept of multiple superheroes coexisting within a single metropolis.
The potential issue here is that by not showing characters interacting, the strength of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – its connected universe where characters can theoretically cross over – may work against itself. This could make the concept of a shared universe seem invalid and leave stories like ‘Born Again’ feeling disconnected from the rest of the MCU.
It’s unfortunate since I believe the concept of Devil’s Reign has potential, but I have concerns about how we’re executing it. It’s possible my apprehensions are unwarranted. After all, we know that the upcoming film ‘Born Again’ will introduce fresh vigilantes to the MCU, such as White Tiger, and The Punisher is expected to make a comeback.
It seems clear that Marvel understands the necessity of incorporating more superheroes from the streets of New York in order to tell this story convincingly. Who knows, they might even bring back some Defenders for a delightful reunion reminiscent of Netflix’s style.
I share the sentiment that dedicated Daredevil fans are primarily seeking a deep, character-focused struggle between Fisk and Daredevil, rather than an abundance of guest appearances. My concern lies in attempting to bring the epic storyline of Devil’s Reign, one of my favorites from recent years, to a smaller screen adaptation, which might dilute its impact and make it seem more like The Devil’s Light Sprinkles instead of The Devil’s Reign, given that “reign” sounds like rain. To clarify, the punchline is that the best jokes require an explanation.
