Warning! Spoilers ahead for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 5.
Marvel’s recent Multiverse Saga has been uneven. While we’ve seen some fantastic projects like WandaVision, X-Men ’97, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, there have also been some truly disappointing movies and shows. Films like Quantumania, Secret Invasion, and Love and Thunder really damaged the audience’s overall enjoyment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has become very inconsistent.
Marvel’s ambitious experiment with the multiverse hasn’t been perfect, but it’s at its best when it delivers the team-ups and battles fans have always dreamed of. For example, we got a hilarious action comedy pairing Deadpool and Wolverine, reminiscent of the movie Midnight Run. And we finally saw all three movie Spider-Men together, battling their combined villains on the Statue of Liberty.
In a surprising move, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has introduced an unexpected character team-up. While the Daredevil: Born Again series largely avoids connections to the broader Marvel storyline – Matt Murdock isn’t teaming up with Captain America, and events from Thunderbolts aren’t being discussed – it has managed a unique crossover. The show brought together two different actors to play the same character, Daredevil, in a single scene.
Daredevil: Born Again Reveals Buck & Wesley Knew Each Other
After the shocking cliffhanger from last week, episode 5 of Daredevil: Born Again, titled “The Grand Design,” focuses on a desperate attempt to save Vanessa Fisk after she suffers a severe head injury. Her condition is critical throughout the episode, causing Fisk’s team to work hard to manage the situation and control what people are hearing. Amidst all the chaos, it’s revealed that Kingpin’s current advisor, Buck Cashman, has a history with his former advisor, James Wesley.
Fans have nicknamed Buck “British Wesley” because he fulfills the same role and has a similar personality to Wesley from the original series – the main difference being his accent. Now, after the most recent episode of Daredevil, both characters have appeared on screen together. This highlights a trend in Born Again season 2: expanding the backstories of characters first introduced in season 1. These characters felt like stand-ins initially, but now they’re being developed into fully realized individuals with their own unique roles.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, Episode 5 Is The Show’s Best Episode Yet
While Daredevil: Born Again has consistently delivered strong episodes, “The Grand Design” stands out as a highlight, particularly resembling the quality of the original Netflix series. The episode boldly killed off Vanessa and presented a satisfying, complete story arc for Daredevil and Bullseye. It was a treat to see Elden Henson reprise his role as Foggy Nelson alongside Charlie Cox – their on-screen connection remains fantastic. The writers cleverly used flashbacks featuring Foggy to influence current events, reminiscent of how Lost utilized its flashback structure.
It’s beautifully ironic that Foggy’s kindness motivates Matt to save the man who attacked him, offering him a chance at redemption. This moment delves into the Catholic guilt that’s always been central to Daredevil’s story – a theme often present in the comics but seldom explored in previous adaptations. Matt, still burdened by his attempt to kill Bullseye, sees saving his attacker as a way to atone for his own actions. This episode is where Daredevil: Born Again finally feels like a worthy successor to the original series.
