Daniela Ramírez-Led ‘La Isla’ Series Starts Southern Chile Shoot in October (EXCLUSIVE)

As a longtime enthusiast of captivating narratives that push the boundaries of traditional storytelling, I am utterly thrilled by the impending production of “La Isla.” Having traversed the globe in search of tales that delve into the unknown and explore global issues, this sci-fi thriller series seems like a perfect fit for my insatiable appetite for the extraordinary.

“The series titled ‘La Isla’, a sci-fi thriller that was showcased at events like Sanfic Series Lab, Conecta Fiction, and Iberseries last year, will commence its main filming in October.”

Daniela Ramirez, who was nominated for an International Emmy for her role in the three-part HBO Max series “Isabel: The Intimate Story of Isabel Allende,” has been confirmed to co-star with Néstor Cantillana (from the show “NO”).

Written by Felipe Carmona (“Prison in the Andes”), this six-part series revolves around a persistent detective named Ramírez who goes back to her native town in the mysterious Chiloé archipelago to unravel the mystery behind a missing Mexican archaeology student.

At that location, she needs to decide if the incident involves a kidnapping, or rather, it might be linked to the legendary island of Friendship, which seems illogical given the circumstances. As per accounts, multiple disappearances, mysterious healings, and alleged extraterrestrial occurrences have taken place there, as suggested by the summary.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share our vision – a narrative that delves into universal themes, such as envisioning life beyond our planet, the transition point in humanity marked by the rise of artificial intelligence, and the integration of the profound cultural heritage and mythology distinctive to southern Chile. This is the mission we, at Rio Estudios in Chile, have undertaken.

Rodrigo Susarte (known as Gen Mishima and Invunche) steps in as the new director following the departure of Claudia Huaiquimilla, who had to leave due to scheduling complications.

Susarte stated: “We find ourselves on the brink of the world’s demise; our society is shattered, and there appears to be no turning back. The principles that once held us together are collapsing, rendering it challenging to discern right from wrong in today’s societies. This perspective seems crucial to me in crafting such a unique setting as ‘La Isla.'”

“He explained that his work challenges traditional film genres and develops fresh storylines to broaden modern narratives. Transformation and metamorphosis are crucial elements of his artistic approach, symbolizing personal and societal growth. He spoke about ‘La Isla,’ where this transformation journey is depicted in a series format, allowing us to delve into various themes. Loss and the unknown’s fear are significant elements in the plot, which evolve into sci-fi narratives. This inspires him to construct a distinctive universe for films produced in the Southern Cone, offering a fresh perspective on imaginative storytelling.”

Principal photography begins Oct. 21 in the Los Ríos region of Chile.

Rio Studies is on the lookout for a Mexican joint-producer for Season 2, as it’s anticipated that this season will take place in Mexico. It’s said by Díaz that there’s an island reminiscent of the mysterious one from our show, called Isla Vermeja, located in Mexico.

The series is produced jointly by Filmo Estudios, a post production/VFX studio based in Santiago that has worked on notable projects such as Pablo Larrain’s “El Conde” and Maite Alberdi’s Oscar-nominated “The Eternal Memory”, with support from state-run agencies CNTV and Corfo. Their upcoming fiction debut, “El lugar de la otra”, is also under their belt.

“Díaz stated that since the show is a science fiction thriller with lots of visual effects, Filmo Estudios significantly contributes to its appearance and storyline,” he said.

Miami-based MGE, run by Esperanza Garay, will handle distribution.
