Even though the Harry Potter films finished in 2011, people still enjoy watching them on HBO Max. Many fans grew up alongside the cast, especially Daniel Radcliffe, and he’s become used to jokes about his role as Harry Potter. Recently, he shared a particularly funny encounter he had with a fan. Here’s the story.
As fans eagerly await the new Harry Potter TV series, Daniel Radcliffe is currently promoting a filmed version of his Broadway musical, Merrily We Roll Along. He recently appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers where he discussed the constant Harry Potter jokes he’s heard throughout his career, explaining that:
I almost never hear a Harry Potter joke that actually makes me laugh. It’s not that the jokes are bad, it’s just that I’ve heard them all before, so it takes something truly clever to surprise me. The last time I was here, I had my son with me – I prefer not to mention him on TV – and they were holding a production meeting behind the scenes.
Daniel Radcliffe welcomed a child in 2023 and has made a conscious effort to protect their privacy, even avoiding mentioning the child’s name publicly. While explaining this boundary on Seth Meyers’ show, he was treated to a particularly funny Harry Potter joke.

HBO Max subscriptions begin at $10.99 per month and are the place to stream all things Harry Potter. For $10.99 (with ads), you get access to a vast library of movies, TV shows, documentaries, and more. See the deal here.
Later in the show, Seth Meyers shared a joke that even made Daniel Radcliffe laugh. He explained that while many kids who grew up with Harry Potter don’t recognize him now, adults still do. He then recounted a funny conversation he had with Radcliffe backstage at Late Night:
I asked how old Daniel’s child was, and someone responded that the child was around two years old, but they don’t publicly reveal the child’s name. My producer, Kevin Miller, then jokingly asked if the child’s name was Voldemort.
It’s a really striking parallel! Miller noticed that Radcliffe avoiding saying his children’s names reminded her of how Voldemort was only called “You-Know-Who” or “He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named” in the Harry Potter series. The Now You See Me actor later explained:
It’s really good. It’s a really good joke.
Daniel Radcliffe has heard a lot of Harry Potter jokes over the years, but one from Late Night actually made him laugh. It was a particularly clever joke, especially the suggestion that he’d named his son Voldemort.
All of the Harry Potter movies are currently available to stream on HBO Max. The platform will also be where the new TV series will eventually air, though fans will have to wait until 2027 for that to happen.
