Daniel Craig, Cillian Murphy Eyed to Star in Damien Chazelle’s Next Film

Cillian Murphy and Daniel Craig are in negotiations to star in Damien Chazelle‘s next film.

The Academy Award-winning director of “La La Land”, Damien Chazelle, is set to script and direct an as-yet-unnamed movie for Paramount Pictures. Alongside him, Olivia Hamilton will produce the project under their shared production company, Wild Chickens Productions.

Despite the specifics of the storyline remaining undisclosed, it’s anticipated that the upcoming movie will fall under the genre of prison-based dramas, as suggested by Deadline, who initially broke the news. If negotiations between Murphy and Craig are successful, filming is planned to begin towards the end of this year.

The movie brings Chazelle back together with Paramount, who backed his previous cinematic venture, “Babylon,” released in 2022. This movie, a glorification of the entertainment industry fueled by drugs and featuring Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, was a catastrophic flop at the box office, earning only $63 million against its production cost of $80 million. Besides “Babylon,” Chazelle has also directed “Whiplash” and “First Man.”

The film reconnects Chazelle with Paramount, a studio that previously funded his movie “Babylon,” which came out in 2022. This movie, a celebration of the entertainment world under the influence of drugs and starring Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, was an epic failure at the box office, grossing only $63 million against its $80 million budget. Apart from “Babylon,” Chazelle has also directed other movies like “Whiplash” and “First Man.”

In 2022, Chazelle established a preliminary agreement with Paramount Pictures. The studio disclosed in 2024 that Chazelle was working on a new project – allegedly a biographical film about the renowned stunt performer Evel Knievel, with Leonardo DiCaprio attached to it. However, after DiCaprio withdrew from the project, Chazelle shifted his focus elsewhere.

Instead, Chazelle will have to make do with collaborating with other prominent actors. Craig, who has hung up his James Bond suit, is set to feature next in Rian Johnson’s third “Knives Out” mystery titled “Wake Up Dead Man”, and Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of “Narnia”. On the other hand, Murphy clinched an Oscar for portraying the theoretical physicist behind the atomic bomb in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer”.
