Dan and Phil, popular British YouTubers, recently shared that they’ve been in a romantic relationship for the past 15 years. This came after they both publicly came out as gay in 2019.
Daniel Howell and Phil Lester are a well-known pair who create videos for YouTube. They’ve been posting content since the mid-2000s, but they didn’t begin their collaborative gaming channel until 2014.
Fans had playfully speculated for years that the two were a couple, and those rumors intensified when they both publicly came out as gay in 2019.
In a video announcing he was gay, Dan revealed that he and Phil were a couple, calling them “soul mates.”
He described the connection as something deeper than just romance, explaining that he truly felt liked and able to trust this person. He hadn’t felt that level of safety since childhood. They were, he said, genuine best friends and companions on life’s journey.
The couple announced in January 2021 that they had bought a house together, and now, after four years, they’ve shared another big piece of news.

Dan and Phil revealed in a YouTube video posted on October 13, 2025, that they’ve been a couple since 2009, when they initially connected online.
They decided to keep their relationship private for a while, and there were a few reasons why. Dan shared that he grew up in a family that was very prejudiced against LGBTQ+ people, which made it hard for him to be open about being gay.
Adding to their concerns, both YouTubers feared revealing their relationship would take attention away from their work. They also believed the constant guessing from fans had created extra pressure while they were at their most popular.
Looking back to my twenties, it’s clear we felt pressured to keep things secret. I was still figuring myself out, not fully comfortable being open with my friends and family, and honestly, even with myself. It’s like there was this huge difference between how people saw ‘Dan and Phil’ as the funny YouTube duo, and how we were as a couple – those felt like two totally separate things.
“It’s a big scary deal for us,” Phil added. “It’s kind of like another mini coming-out.”

Now that they’d openly discussed a difficult topic, the pair shared their renewed dedication to creating content and announced the launch of their highly anticipated podcast.

Dan and Phil asked their fans for privacy and set some ground rules. These rules asked fans to respect their boundaries and avoid searching for or sharing private information without their permission.
“I want to leave the house without being spied on,” Phil said. “Even going for a meal.”
“I just want to eat my pasta in peace!” Dan joked.
