Daisy Ridley’s Zombie Movie Now Among Hulu’s Most Popular Films

Daisy Ridley, known for her role in Star Wars, recently starred in a zombie thriller where she used an axe instead of a lightsaber. After playing in cinemas, the movie is now available on Hulu and has quickly become a popular streaming hit.

The new movie We Bury the Dead premiered on May 8th and quickly became popular, landing at number 3 on Hulu’s list of top 10 movies in the US. It’s currently behind Sam Raimi’s Send Help and The Devil Wears Prada, which recently had a sequel released in theaters. Rounding out the top five are the comedies White Chicks and Keeping Up with the Joneses.

We Bury the Dead Finally Arrives in the U.S.

The film We Bury the Dead first debuted at the Adelaide Film Festival in South Australia in 2024, and then came to U.S. theaters in January 2026. Despite being shown in only a limited number of theaters, it earned $2.5 million on its opening weekend – the best result ever for the independent studio Vertical Entertainment. It was also released in Australia and New Zealand the next month. Critics generally liked the movie, giving it an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Though We Bury the Dead is a zombie film, it’s surprisingly heartfelt, exploring themes of grief and loss. The story follows Ava, played by Ridley, whose husband disappears after a disastrous military experiment in Tasmania wipes out much of the population. She joins a team sent to recover bodies, hoping to find him, but the mission becomes dangerous when the dead begin to rise. Even as threats from both zombies and desperate survivors increase, Ava persists in her search.

The Film Gets Scarier as the Story Progresses

Ridley has described the zombies in the film as initially calm, but becoming more aggressive over time. He explained to Collider that while it’s a classic zombie movie, it also explores deeper themes like dealing with loss, the search for meaning, and how we cope when faced with difficult truths.

Ava has set out to find her husband, unsure if he’s truly gone. While searching for him, she discovers she can’t reach him, which leads to an unexpected journey as she escapes with the aid of a kind stranger, turning the story into a road trip adventure.

I’m really excited about Zak Hilditch’s new film, We Bury the Dead! It’s got a great cast, including Brenton Thwaites, who you might recognize from Home and Away, as well as Mark Coles Smith from Picnic at Hanging Rock, Kym Jackson who was in The Devil’s Dolls, Matt Whelan of American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story, and Salme Geransar, known for Mystery Road: Origin. I think it’s going to be fantastic!

We Bury the Dead is streaming on Hulu.
