In an interview with Elle Magazine, Daisy Edgar-Jones shared that it’s fortunate for her that her A-list male co-stars have never had a problem with her being the main star instead of them. She initially gained recognition alongside Paul Mescal in “Normal People,” then went on to act with Sebastian Stan (“Fresh”), Harris Dickinson (“Where the Crawdads Sing”), Glen Powell (“Twisters”), Andrew Garfield (“Under the Banner of Heaven”), and Jacob Elordi (“On Swift Horses”). Edgar-Jones playfully remarked that she’s essentially “worked with most of the internet’s crushes,” leaving only Timothée Chalamet and Austin Butler on her list.
She mentioned, becoming more serious, that every actor she’s collaborated with has been exceptionally supportive of her taking the lead role. Specifically, Glen, Sebastian, and Paul. She believes their success, admiration, and talent stem from their generosity and dedication to the story rather than themselves. Glen was always concerned about Kate’s character development, saying, ‘Let’s focus on Kate’s journey.’ Similarly, Sebastian was fully committed to Noa’s journey. Working with Paul is like playing tennis with your best friend. She’s a bit anxious about the day she’ll have to work with someone who might not be as easy-going, given how much ego can exist in this profession.
Dickinson praised Edgar-Jones for making “The Crawdads” so effortless, sharing with Elle magazine: “She is one of the most compassionate individuals I’ve come across. Her vast patience and understanding contribute to her remarkable kindness. I believe this sensitivity also makes her a truly gifted artist.”
Or simply,
Dickinson commended Edgar-Jones for making “The Crawdads” feel like a breeze, telling Elle magazine: “She’s incredibly kind and patient. Her sensitivity makes her a wonderful artist, as it allows her to fully connect with her work.
It’s wonderful to see more stories featuring women as the main characters. As a woman in my twenties, I appreciate finding complex characters who aren’t just ingénues. I yearn for roles with agency and depth. Every character I play should be multi-dimensional, reflecting the complexity of being human. I feel fortunate that many of the roles I’ve had have been like this. They haven’t been defined by their actions, experiences, or relationships with men. For instance, in ‘Twisters,’ Kate’s journey was more than just a romantic one, despite some people complaining about the lack of a kiss at the end.
Edgar-Jones’ newest movie, “On Swift Horses,” debuts in cinemas on April 25, distributed by Sony Pictures Classics. Visit Elle’s site to read the complete cover story.
