As a lifelong sports enthusiast who grew up watching ESPN, I must say I am both intrigued and skeptical about their latest venture into the animated realm. On one hand, the idea of seeing Daisy Duck reporting on an NBA game is as unexpected as Mickey Mouse calling a football match (though I must admit, it does bring a certain charm).
ESPN‘s latest hire: Daisy Duck.
The animated waterfowl has been a part of the sports giant’s parent company for more than 80 years, but on Christmas Day, she’ll take a shot at something completely different, working as a sideline reporter while the New York Knicks take on the San Antonio Spurs in an animated version of an NBA game playing in real time. The cartoon game will run on ESPN2, Disney+ and ESPN+, the latest attempt by ESPN to devise new sports formats that are more attractive to young children and their families, perhaps, than the real thing.
The game appears to unfold along the famous Main Street USA within Disney’s Magic Kingdom theme park. As the Spurs and Knicks players make their moves, their actions will be tracked using optical and real-time technology. Throughout the game, beloved characters like Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto, and Chip and Dale will enthusiastically support them.
Additionally, they’ll participate in activities related to the competition. During halftime, Disney characters will engage in a unique slam dunk challenge. The Santa’s Elves will manage the cameras during the game. Moreover, the characters will give pre-game and halftime talks to the players, and they’ll decorate a grand Christmas tree while the players battle it out on the court. Simultaneously, Daisy will collaborate with Drew Carter and Monica McNutt, two ESPN regulars who will commentate the game and be animated in a manner similar to the broadcast, wearing special virtual-reality equipment to observe the contest just as viewers do.
For quite some time, ESPN has been trying out ideas aimed at attracting younger viewers who may not typically watch professional sports. This strategy is driven by the desire of leagues to expand their fan bases as their games are spread across multiple media platforms. The networks, recognizing the substantial fees they pay for these games, are focusing more on content that complements them and generating a return on this investment.
As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Disney and ESPN are sending beloved “Simpsons” characters into the arena for an upcoming animated NFL match set to broadcast on December 9!
Notable personalities have taken part in innovative endeavors. Recently, Paramount Global aired a special broadcast of Super Bowl LVIII on the child-oriented Nickelodeon, featuring its own sports commentators, distinct commercials, and the network’s iconic green slime. Simultaneously, Disney and ESPN have showcased a hockey matchup with characters from “Big City Greens” and in 2021 experimented with a game involving Marvel characters during an NBA match between the Golden State Warriors and the New Orleans Pelicans for kids to play along. Last year, an animated version of a Sunday-morning football game between the Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars from Wembley Stadium in London used “Toy Story” characters such as Woody, Buzz, Bo Peep, Bullseye, and Slinky Dog.
For the first time, an NBA game is set to air on Christmas Day in an animated format, making history as the inaugural league contest presented in this style. Additionally, it will be the first time an NBA game is streamed on Disney+.
