This summer, Cynthia Erivo is preparing to portray Jesus Christ in a staging of “Jesus Christ Superstar” by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice at the Hollywood Bowl. Excitedly, she announced this news on Instagram with the caption: “My schedule’s quite packed this summer, can’t wait!” Notably, Erivo has previously been involved in the show, having played Mary Magdalene in a female-led adaptation of the successful musical back in 2020 and sung the widely recognized tune “I Don’t Know How to Love Him.
The opening acts for “Jesus Christ Superstar” at the Hollywood Bowl will commence on August 1st and continue until the 3rd. Further cast details will be shared at a later time. Notably, Tony Award winner Sergio Trujillo is taking on the roles of director and choreographer, while Tony winner Stephen Oremus has been appointed as musical director and conductor for this production.
Originally, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ was introduced as an album focusing on a concept, later gracing the Broadway stage in 1971. The musical is centered around the final week of Jesus’ life. In 1973, a film adaption helmed by Norman Jewison premiered. More recently, in 2018, NBC broadcasted ‘Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert’ on Easter Sunday with John Legend portraying Jesus Christ and Sara Bareilles as Mary Magdalene.
During a bustling phase of her career, Cynthia Erivo has been cast as Jesus Christ. She’s currently garnering an Oscar nomination for best actress due to her portrayal of Elphaba in Jon M. Chu’s film adaptation of “Wicked.” Notably, Erivo is the second Black actress to embody Elphaba in a significant “Wicked” production, following Alexia Khadime who originally played the role from 2008-2010 on the West End and returned to it in 2023.
Earlier, Erivo expressed that her portrayal of ‘Wicked’ was a heartfelt tribute to those who feel unique or misplaced, as well as to every Black woman who has entered a space and felt unwelcomed.
Erivo will as Elphaba in “Wicked: For Good,” in theaters this November from Universal Pictures.
