Cynthia Erivo Says ‘Wicked’ Fans Should Sing Along in Movie Theaters: ‘It’s Time for Everyone Else To Join In’

As a seasoned theatergoer who has belted out my fair share of showtunes in the comfort of my seat (and sometimes off-key), I wholeheartedly endorse Cynthia Erivo‘s encouragement for fans to sing along with “Wicked”! It’s like a secret society bonding over our shared love for this timeless musical.

Actress Cynthia Erivo, best known for her role in “Wicked”, has shared her thoughts on a discussion happening online regarding audience behavior: Is it appropriate for viewers to join in singing the iconic musical numbers during the film screening at the cinema?

During a chat at Thursday’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on NBC, Erivo, who portrays Elphaba, consented to fans who felt inspired to croon along. When Hoda Kotb asked if it was acceptable to sing in the theater because so many were doing so, Erivo replied, “Great! I’m fine with it. We’ve spent so much time singing it ourselves – it’s about time everyone else gets involved. It’s delightful.

Cynthia Erivo has joined Dwayne Johnson as the most recent famous figure urging fans to join in on the singing at a live-action movie musical, with Johnson expressing his enthusiasm for audience participation during the premiere of “Moana 2” by stating, “Go ahead and sing! You’ve spent your valuable money on a ticket, you’re attending a musical, and you’re engaged. Sing along!

Audience singing at “Wicked” has sparked online debate, as some ticket buyers only care to hear the professionals in the film. AMC Theatres spokesperson Ryan Noonan recently gave an interview where he explained why the chain asked audiences not to sing, saying, “AMC has a long-standing policy that prohibits disruptive behavior. The ‘Wicked’ preshow spot [which includes ‘no singing’] incorporates the themes of the film as a fun, engaging reminder to moviegoers to not disrupt the experience for those around them as they enjoy the show.”

Fans won’t have to wait long before they can join in singing with Erivo and Ariana Grande – interactive sing-along screenings of the movie are due to start on Christmas Day. These performances will take place at approximately 1,000 cinemas across North America.

At “Wicked” screenings, it’s not just singing along that’s sparked controversy. Some enthusiasts have begun recording parts of the movie on their phones and sharing them online, an act that not only disturbs fellow cinema-goers but is also against the law.

Erivo kicked off the interview by offering Kotb a bouquet of flowers, since he’s preparing to leave “Today” in January, making this his last appearance hosting the Thanksgiving parade.
