Cyberpunk 2 Is Probably Further Away Than You Hope

This week, it was confirmed by CD Projekt Red that a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is now being prepared for launch. Currently, the team internally refers to this project as “Cyberpunk 2,” but don’t get too excited just yet – according to co-CEO Michał Nowakowski, it could be several years before we see the next installment in the series on store shelves.

As a gamer eagerly waiting for the next big release from CD Projekt Red, I can tell you that, on average, our games take around four to five years to develop, from the initial concept to the final release date. It’s important to remember that each project is unique and factors like team size, complexity of the game, and unexpected challenges can significantly impact the timeline. So, while I can’t pinpoint exact years for our upcoming projects, rest assured we’re working tirelessly to deliver an unforgettable gaming experience.

If Cyberpunk 2 gets a release date around 2030 or 2031, that implies it will be about a decade after Cyberpunk 2077 was launched. It’s also probable that it will debut during the next generation of gaming consoles, possibly on PlayStation 6 and whatever follows Xbox Series X|S.

It seems that the majority of resources at CD Projekt Red (CDPR) are being directed towards The Witcher 4, a project which entered pre-production relatively recently last year. Meanwhile, CD Projekt Red North America is engaged in the development of Cyberpunk 2, with a recent job advertisement indicating that they aim to create crowds in this sequel that appear as realistic as possible.

Mike Pondsmith, the mastermind behind the Cyberpunk series, isn’t personally involved in the development of Cyberpunk 2. However, Pondsmith has hinted that a second city will be introduced in the sequel, apart from Night City, which served as the backdrop for the initial game.

The enhanced version of Cyberpunk 2077, known as the Ultimate Edition, is expected to debut on the Nintendo Switch 2 shortly following its release date of June 5. In other words, you can expect the game to hit stores around a month after the Switch 2 makes its grand entrance.
