The progress on the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 follow-up has significantly advanced, with the project now moving into its preliminary production phase. This next installment in the series is now titled: Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel.
Approximately a few weeks back, the team at CDPR working on their upcoming game within the Cyberpunk universe finished the conceptual stage of the project. This advancement has propelled Cyberpunk 2 (earlier known as Project Orion) into pre-production, as stated in CDPR’s Q1 2025 financial report.
The inception of Cyberpunk dates back several years, and the term ‘pre-production’ implies that a number of components must align first – ranging from preliminary sketches to hiring personnel and numerous other critical elements – before substantial progress can truly commence.
It’s not unusual for a game’s title to be modified over time within the gaming industry, and the title “Cyberpunk 2” may change as well before its official release. The current title was unveiled during an investor announcement, indicating it might be a temporary or working title that doesn’t fully reveal the sequel’s content. A formal game unveiling could lead to a new title being chosen to better match the themes and concepts of the sequel.
In 2024, CDPR shared that Cyberpunk 2 was in its preliminary development stages, with the initial focus being on establishing a robust foundation for the game’s creators. Key personnel from the original game, such as game director Gabriel Amatangelo and associate game director Paweł Sasko, are spearheading the project at CDPR’s new Boston studio. Additionally, CDPR has recruited seasoned professionals from Blizzard, IO Interactive, and Massive Entertainment to bolster the team working on Cyberpunk 2.
During the current phase of game development, specifics are still scarce, but it has been confirmed that the game will be constructed using Unreal Engine 5. In contrast, Cyberpunk 2077 was developed within CDPR’s proprietary Red Engine. Moreover, Cyberpunk’s creator, Mike Pondsmith, has subtly suggested that players may have the opportunity to traverse a second city in some manner.
Although Cyberpunk 2 has yet to be released, the initial game and its acclaimed expansion, Phantom Liberty, are planned as a launch title for the Switch 2. This could potentially boost the game’s existing record-breaking sales of 25 million units.
