As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for quirky indie titles and a deep affection for Japanese culture, I am absolutely thrilled about Tanuki: Pon’s Summer! Having spent countless hours exploring virtual villages in games like Animal Crossing, I can’t wait to dive into this new adventure. The combination of summer activities, BMX stunts, and the opportunity to build relationships with unique characters through an emoji-based interface sounds like a dream come true.
In a recent announcement during Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show streaming event, Denkiworks – an independent studio based in Kyoto – unveiled their first game titled “Tanuki: Pon’s Summer”. This charming adventure game invites players to assume the character of a cuddly tanuki who rides BMX bikes and serves as the village postman for a picturesque Japanese hamlet.
This game bears some resemblance to Animal Crossing, offering summer activities like catching bugs and fishing, as well as a community of eccentric personalities to engage with. However, unlike Animal Crossing, your character Pon is the sole creature in a human-inhabited village. Instead of a wide variety of critters, you can develop relationships with the other characters using a straightforward emoji interaction system.
In his daily tasks of mail delivery and doing odd jobs for the villagers, Pon manages to perform impressive BMX stunts, navigating a Japanese village inspired by actual locations in Kyoto and Sapporo. What Pon aspires to achieve is the restoration and adornment of the Great Tanuki Shrine in time for the Matsuri festival towards the end of summer. During the summer months, Pon can engage in various other activities such as preparing sushi, singing karaoke, watching sumo wrestling matches, and playing baseball.
Denkiworks, the company in question, was established by three former employees from Q-Games: Liam Edwards, Taku Arioka, and Jan de Graaf. Notably, Liam Edwards is the inventor and director of Cursed to Golf, a golf-like game that received high praise, with de Graaf contributing as a programmer for this project at Chuhai Labs.
In the upcoming season, “Pon’s Summer” is set to be distributed by Critical Reflex. This exciting title is slated for launch on PC, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch platforms. However, the specific release date is yet to be revealed.
